72 case 450 dozer engine noise

Before use today oil and antifreeze was at proper level. During use a knock developed, notice engine temp at 220 degrees, and blowing black soot. Was thinking of cracking injectors to see if knock changed. Also noticed fan was push air to front of machine not pull back. Is that normal operation? Black particles by exhaust is chunks of soot! Oil psi at idle is 30 Any advice is greatly appreciated!

If you're lucky it's a bad injector. loosen the lines at the injector, one at a time to see if the knock goes away, or the engine speed doesn't change, just like pulling a spark plug wire one at a time to diagnose a dead cylinder. Except the injector can also be causing the knock, so you can switch the injector to another cylinder, or just get new ones and swap a new one for the knocking hole.

you might want to check your air cleaner is not party obstructed , it would cause black smoke and some heating issues , before pulling anything else apart .

The oil pick up tube came loose from the oil pump? Ouch! Sorry to hear of your troubles. The Case 188 engine is easy to work on and easy to R&R. Good luck!
