78 john deere 410. main boom not working after hydraulic lines replaced?

thanks in advance. just replaced all 6 hyd lines to the backhoe because of one failure. now everything works except the main boom cylinder. worked 100% before replacement. it does extend fine but wont retract at all. 1-is there a bleed procedure for these machines? 2-does the boom need to be extended or retracted before line replacement? thanks im stumped, completely new to these

I' ve replaces many hydraulic hoses on backhoes and bleeding is usually no problem. Just connect the hoses and cycle the cylinders several times and all is done providing the tank is topped off. Knowing you have a problem, you could loosen the connection on one end of the cylinder and apply pressure to the other end. As the piston travels to the opposite end the air will escape through the loose connection. Tighten the fitting and try again.

If you had multiple hoses disconnected at once trace the hose routing to see if you may have inadvertanly swapped two hoses, Bleeding the air out is not necessary on most hydraulic systems. Mel

i did mark the hoses before removal but ill need to check that again. is there a site or photo that shows the routing up close? cant seem to find one to make sure theyre correct. thanks

Did you notice an odd fitting or connector in the Boom Lift line? Some hoes have a Slow Return Check Valve that is adjustable by turning. I have seen people change a line and turn the adjuster while tightening the line connector. This closes the return and causes a problem likel yours. Boom goes up easy but will not lower. Later Bob
