I have a 1996 850D Case Dozer that was recently serviced by a "certified technician." Problems with the dozer is it would go in reverse but it wouldn't pull. The "technician" has pulled the dozer apart and it still isn't fixed.. Any suggestions on what to check would be appreciated. Here's what has been done so far....he took the reverse clutch out, replaced the ring that holds the clutch pack. The clutch pack housing was busted. He replaced the housing. Now you can switch the dozer in reverse and it won't pull, then when you press the gas pedal it won't move into reverse. You can let off the gas and then press the pedal and then it will go, still seems very weak. It will go into forward and pull in forward when using the levers and turn in forward with no problem. The problem is isolated to reversing. My thoughts are the problems are in the valve body. Does anybody have any info on how to run a pressure test on this model dozer or any suggestions on what to try next?
You may want to go over to the track loader forum and look up Case transmission. There is a description of each type and the problems they can have. Are you sure its a 96 model. It seems it would be a late E model of G model. Are the controls between your legs or on the left console? There's a guy on here Alrman , he's the Case man. You might look him up and pm him.
Not positive on the year. The controls are between the legs. I looked at the PSI gauge on the dash today and it registers 275 when you put in N and F, it drops to 175 in Reverse.
Welcome to HEF WTHOMPSON! Mmmm... it's never good to see a pressure loss like you have described. You will need to disconnect the reverse pressure hose from the end cap & test the pressure there. This will either prove the leakage to be in the valve or in the transmission. If you have system pressure here, it only leaves the shaft oil control rings & clutch pack piston seals at fault. Alternately, you can swap fwd & rev hoses, if the pressure drop changes to fwd, the problem is in the transmission area. If it remains in rev - look at the valve. Can you be more specific with the repairs that were carried out on the transmission? "The ring that holds the clutch pack" - would that be the large snap ring that retains all the plates? "The clutch pack was busted" - ?? The snap ring groove is broken? & unable to retain the plates?? Were new parts used in the repair or used? Were all the clutch packs inspected & resealed?
The reverse clutch pack housing was busted where the large snap ring goes, the snap ring was out. New parts were used (a new housing and snap ring.) resealed just reverse only. all the plates look good.
Planning on checking your recommendations today for pressure today to see anything changes. Do you know what the pressure should read at the valve? Thanks for your input.
System pressure is 250 - 310 psi at full RPM. What is important is that fwd & rev pressures are within 10-20psi of neutral - with same amount of delay for gear selection - all at idle.
Torque converter over heating trouble shooting
Rule one, check the fan belt and adjuster, for tension. Clean the radiator upper/ lower/sides for honeycomb build up of oil/ trash leaves. Is the trans low on oil, Is the trans temp gauge working correct.
Could it be the thermostat in the trans oil line causing the convertor to overheat? They are fairly cheap and worth a try.
