Recently got a new to me triaxle that was to cheap to not buy but its now time for it to either start making money or move on. Anyway trucks a 95 rd688s e6 350 with an 8ll trans. The main issue with the truck other than most of the gauges not working is the power steering is basically non existent. Nothing appears to be leaking externally, the steering shafts take grease and are free, and the filter looks pretty clean. I'm thinking the pump is shot but am not familiar with these bigger trucks and can't seem to get a solid answer as to what pump the truck takes and if there is a rebuild kit for it. Other small issues are the water temp gauge doesn't work, nor does the tac, pyro meter, or what i believe to be either pto pressure or a turbo drive pressure gauge. Any help in identifying the pump and or advice on the gauges would be great.
If you post up a picture of the dash, someone can probably identify what all the gauges are for. The gauge stuff isn't really any different from older car stuff, most of its pretty simple. Water temp should just be sending unit or the gauge is bad. Power steering- you should be able to see what the pump is putting out for pressure with a gauge, and if its good, it could be a relief stuck in the steering gear box.
Here's a photo of the gauge in question (directly under the pyro meter) and some of the pump thats currently in the truck.
Any Mack dealer can ID the pump by chassis serial number. Pyrometer is self powered by probe in exhaust after turbo (thermocouple i believe it's called). Temperature gauge circuit powers from dash 12v and goes to sensor on water manifold (resistance to ground changes as temperature changes). Schematic\/
That's a Vickers V20 power steering pump, CC or CCW models. Look for the tag, It will have one.
the gauge under your pyro looks like a intake manifold/ turbo boost pressure gauge.
One thing to keep in mind is there are two major parts of that steering system. One the pump and two the steering box. Also I believe there is a pressure relief valve mounted on a bracket on or near the steering box. I don't have access to the old Mack manuals that I had at work but might be something in the link below that might give you some ideas on the steering. http://www.hydrosteer.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Mseries-Complete.pdf Also maybe other who have worked on one of these systems in the last ten years might have some good ideas.
Crack the return at steering box and check for return flow, Then jack both front wheels and see how it turns.
I appreciate it, I've looked all over the damn thing and couldn't seem to find a tag, im thinking its on the side against the engine so im gunna do a few more checks/tests before condemning and pulling it out.
