my boss has a 963 loader that the left drive motor failed cat dealer wants over 8 grand to fix just the motor is there somewhere else who would have one rebuilt cheaper thanks for any help jim
Part number? My opinion: Do NOT do business with Hydrostatic Transmission Service of Tupelo, MS should you run across them in your research. I was warned and tried it, got badly burned but eventually got most of my money back about a year later. YMMV
If the motor failed and contaminated the system with particles then he has a LOT more to worry about than just the cost of repair of the motor. If all the contamination is not removed before reinstalling the rebuilt motor a repeat failure is pretty much guaranteed. $8k to rebuild a motor doesn't sound that bad on the face of it but the final bill for cleanout of the system could be easily double the cost of repair/rebuild of the motor. It would help a lot to know how the motor failed, along with photos if there are any.
What year? I picked up my 963 for under twice that cost. Might be worth more as salvage and buy another machine.
we took the filter out it had some metals in it but nothing more than normal drained oil tank it was clean machine only has around 2400 to 3000 hrs not sure the tech said when he turn left the motor would go into bypass and dump into the oil tank he found this out when he did a pressure test right motor works fine we don't use it every day just to strip a lot or move dirt piles or bulk load cat told us to run the oil through a filter they have
nige I read you post again it worked fine unloaded off trailer went into backyard started to level dirt piles it would turn both ways then it would just turn right and sometimes left then at idle it would turn enough to get back on the trailer had to turn it with a backhoe to get it on the slab in the yard cat said the same thing about flushing and filtering the system
Our track loader expert CMark really needs to get involved with this one. He's been hands on with these machines for years and knows far more than I do about them. Try sending him a PM.
Nige's last comment on seeing how the motor failed hits the nail on the head. If the failure is in the swash plate and slipper end only, you may get away with just dropping the sump off the HPCU and cleaning out the case drain screens. On the other hand if there is any sign of damage or contamination to the barrel face and port plate, that means metal has got into the loop and into the pump. In that case, just rebuilding the motor will be a waste of money as within a short time you will be rebuilding it again as well as having to overhaul the HPCU. Parts prices for these are expensive and as they are now quite old, availability is getting worse. Proceed with caution.
cmark and nige talked to my brother in law today he told me that the shaft in the motor snapped he didn't tell me this before they said it was a clean break so not a lot of pieces we are going to probably rebuild this motor change the oil then run it for a little bit then change oil and filter again cut the filter open and see thank you all for your help jim
Come back and post photos of the break. I'm sure there are a number of people who would be in interested to see them.
