Ok I have a 973c serial # BCP00310 with cat c9 its been a great machine bought it last year i have put 300 hrs on it cause i run my other machines also. They put a new Cat starter on it when i bought it got loose a bit i tighten it again and then few days later after i filled it up and greased machine went to start it had nothing i checked everything it had nothing batteries are new so my son and i removed starter sent it to the shop they said solenoid $100.00 we reinstalled and i started it up twice real quick and picked up tools to head home as storm was on its way. Another small job came up couple days later so i had to get lowboy guy to move it when i started it i had a flashing red light with the exclamation mark 2nd one on the bottom from the right appear i went ahead and loaded it and had it delivered. I started it up and checked for codes off the dash button and had 030 and 005.11 and a 036 so i did not run it. the next day i went back started it up had no flashing light or codes so i ran it 5 hrs and needed to get fuel the guage does not work its a pain to change in the tank it got low i thought it was about to die suck air as i backing up out of this deep hole i was digging in i got out on level ground and shut it off went and got fuel filled it up started it and then the light and codes came back, i went ahead and ran it some more then noticed it had additional codes appear 164.11 and a 42.11 code I shut it off parked it came back next day started it and those codes 164.11 and 42.11 were gone maybe that 036 was gone also ran it for a couple hrs and it acted funny all a sudden like it was going to die so i switched to idle for a few minutes thinking fuel filters switched back over to full throttle and got a few more buckets then it did it again i flipped switch to rabbit high gear and it ran better than in low speed and did not hiccup all those code were back i parked it. Not wanting to damage anything i called Cat and a few self employed service guys some dont have a clue and all are so swamped it would be mid August for service call and few weeks out for shop service this machine has three toggle switches under the right side arm rest but they dont have anything written above them so i dont know which one does what i know they are for service or delete code switches and calibration yesterday i went to the machine to get numbers off oil and fuel filters to order new ones and i started it up had the red light and 030 and 005.11 only so im flustered im going to try my luck 1st change the fuel filters i had it serviced in a shop before i ever brought it out on a job and had new tracks ect installed its definately time for a service. How does one bleed the air or prime the secondary filter its up side down there is 2 drain lines with yellow on and off switches off its base the hand primer is far up front on the left side its got a wing petcock on it and next to the fuel water seperator there is a toggle switch that operates a electric pump any help on this would be a plus The worst part of this machine is there is not much roomto work on certain things hard to reach items one being that 005.11 pertaining to #5 injector the cab on this 973c does not roll back
Regarding Codes. Every Code has 3 elements, known as MID (Module) CID (Component) & FMI (Failure Mode). So for example 036 is not in itself a Code, neither is 0005.11. But put together 036.0005.11 is a valid Code. Attached the troubleshooting procedure for this Code. May be conincidence, but I suspect not, that you also had an 030.0164.11 Code. 030 refers to the Monitor 036 refers to the Engine ECM TBH your best bet is an Operation & Maintenance Manual. I've put the procedure to bleed the fuel system here but also when you speak about the warning light it's like you are not 100% sure what they are telling you. The O&M would answer all these quesions and more. Search for Cat Publication reference SEBU7413. I don't see any used ones out there at the moment but you can download a pdf copy from the Cat Pubs web site for $52.
In respect of the warning light there are two lights with exclamation points on the bottom row. The 2nd from the left indicates an engine malfunction (could fit with your injector #5 Code), then the 4th one from the left indicates a hydrostatic transmission malfunction. Can you confirm exactly which one was flashing. Can you post a full list of complete Codes from the Monitor indicating which ones are Active please. The indication of an Active Code is that the SERV CODE icon on the RH side of the display window will be lit.
here i just changed the fuel water seporater filter The only 2 codes currently that i get is 036 and 005.11 I called fabic cat the service guy said the toggles are left to right service clear and calibration So when i brought up the codes on the moniter where it shows hrs rpm and miles i pushed down on service and clear at same time till i seen 3 then let up then when 036 appeared i clicked clear abd held a couple seconds i get three dash marks then i have to turn key off to get refreshed and start it then they appear says service code jn corner
So how do i prime that second filter its upside down that cat service guy said just put ut on and start it up That dont sound right My hand primer is under the door left side of cab there is a electric toggle right next to fuel water filter Neither seamed to pump much From what i could tell with filter off Hand pump has a winged nut and drain hose without this open i can not push the orimer
That's only one Code. Did you not read what I posted above.? SERV CODE means you have an Active Code. Try looking at the Codes again. Procedure to get into the Codes. 1. Press both Service and Clear. Hold them until -3- appears in the window and release. 2. Each Code will appear as 2 parts. First part will be 030/036/079, the second part will be xxx.xx (e.g. 005.11). The upside down filter you install dry and then fill it using either the hand priming pump or the electric priming pump depending on how your particular machine is configured. I attached a document containing the fuel priming procedure above.

I believe the hand pump with the shut off valve is the drain for draining water out of fuel tank.

ok getting back to you i did fuel filters got that figured out electric pump worked great the engine fired right up active codes only 2 appear i tried clearing them but they come back with the red light which is engine malfunction 2nd from left on bottom I read thru everything I dont have the Cat ET also I dont know how to get the engine to run at 1500 rpm to get tghe air out of hydraulic pump "HEUI" it's just idle 850rpm or 2150 rpms wide open the throttle switch does not adjust rpms to my knowledge maybe one needs that Cat Et for that.
Active Codes cannot be cleared. You have to fix them first which turns them into Logged Codes before they can be cleared. That makes more sense. What are the two Active Codes.?
Another reason why you need an O&M Manual........... To increase engine speed in increments. When the engine is idling, press and HOLD the top of the throttle switch until the engine RPM rises to whatever RPM you desire, then release it.
036 and 005.11 are the 2 codes

As we mentioned before that is only one Code, MID036 CID0005 FMI11. The troubleshooting procedure for it is in Post #2 above.
After you use two switches to get to codes use only scroll switch to bring up the other codes

Here is what's showing I put all new fuel filters on abd change engine oil and filter Keeps raining off and on It always starts fine runs or idles smooth I figured out the throttle now I can control rpms Thx Nige for everything so far.
yes i finally figured it out so thx i did use the electric pump worked great
I'm going to finish this job if it ever stops raining can't get any mechanics all busy Weeks out and one said they could fix it but want it brought to there shop 1hr away if they have to do #5 injector or heui pump
