980G Travel Speed

Boss ยท 2012-06-19 03:42

I was wondering if anyone else here has noticed the travel speed of a 980g slower then other model 980s. We have a 980G,980 Series II F, and a 980c all at the same job, and while the 980g has the most power, most comfortable and what not it is just a turtle compared to the other two loaders. This is our first 980G so not sure if this is normal or not? It shows the travel speed in 2nd gear at 6mph in forward and 7mph in reverse. We have heard from a couple people that they had there computer reset, and it really made a difference in the power and speed, is there any truth to this? What exactly has to be done?

I use a 980 G series 2. Top speed is about 21 mph. Ill see what 2 gear mph is tomarrow. We have a 980 C, and a 980 G series 1 besides my loader and by far the G series 2 will blow by both the C and G series 1. I think the top speed might be close on all three machines but the G series 2 will out accelerate the outher two.

road speed is important when you are travelling between jobs. The JCB top speed is 24mph

21 mph is top speed in fourth gear. Second gear top speed is 7 mph. This 980G series 2 has 17000 hours on it and has yet to have the engine or transmission rebuilt. The few problems we have had are; Hydraluic pump(piston pump that supplies oil to the cooling fan motor) burned out, Petentiometers were replaced(control levers in the cab.) And a check valve in the auto ride circut failed. Other than these few things it has been a great machine.

Thanks Komatsukid, you are getting one mile an hour faster in 2nd then ours, I haven't checked 4th. Ours has about 17400 hours on it and since we got it we have replaced the hydraulic pump, 6 injectors, injection pump, and a new head. We are have our local Cat dealer come tomorrow morning to plug it into the computer and check the fuel ratio and what ever else they can look at.

I know this, I wasn't expecting a lot of speed but that 1 or 2mph really does make a difference.

Just dug out the brochure that came with our 980G back in 1999. Sppeds for 29.5-25 tires are listed as follows: forward 1=4.3mph 2=7.7mph 3=13.4mph 4=23,2mph

I run own a quarry. We run 4 980h and 1 980g series II. We have other larger loaders but those won't compare. Every loader is different on speed. We bought the H's new and they are all sisters, one number apart. They are rigged exactly the same. They are always split up during normal working shift, but when it is time to load 7500 tons of ballast into train cars they all meet at the rail spur. They all have their respective operators (been on the same loaders since new, some operators better than others of course, very evident in the maintenance side) but for whatever reasons we all end up running each one. they are all different in several aspects. Cycle times up and down, tilt and rack back, time to top engine speed, shift points, and speeds in all gears. I have owned caterpillar ET and SIS for almost five years now, bought it with the loaders, almost a must have and well worth the expense of ownership and training. There's a lot of info to be had that the technician can hide very easily. Anyhow, believe when I tell you I have been through every aspect and setting available through the ECM. I know what each parameter is and what it effects and what the changes are. I have screwed with all of it. No difference in settings between loaders except for some trim settings and full torque settings. And those are locked in with the info on the side of the c15's that power them. Even the G series II is very close. And it runs and cycles faster than 3 of the H's. There is one H though, youngest sister that is just jumping out in front of the pack, full torque being the lowest of the H's. I am in firm belief that some systems that are put together just harmonize better than the others of the exact same flavor. Could be chalked up to wether components were put together and a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. Some were maybe composed during super bowl season, or perhaps the world series. But no atter what, no two piston pumps, torque converters, transmissions, or even injectors will ever function exactly the same, the bigger the result the more evident the difference of course. And then try putting all these components together for one large desired result and differences will definitely rise. You are 1or2mph's from advertised gear speed, that seems to me to be a very close figure. Awful hard for a manufacturer, even as awesome and bold and perfect as Caterpillar, to hit that nail dead on. When loading train cars, not paying exact attention to the bucket scales, just full buckets, the one H will cycle a everything fast enough to load 4 cars to the others three, and operators have been swapped for this test as well. They all have a noticeable different operating feel to them.

Good Post Coondog! We have a 980G in our pit and it maxes out at 8mph but only for a few seconds at a time so i would say coondogs; 7.7 value is right on man. Bartledoo!
