Ronjack, welcome to HEF ! It has been a while since I worked on a L series powershift transmission, but let me offer this and hopefully some more knowledgeable people here can chime in. The transmission is operated directly by the transmission controller and the flashing “T” indicates the transmission controller is detecting a fault condition. There typically are not relays involved. There are a several ways to approach this. Here are a few. 1) If you press and hold the mode switch “M” on the front display for a couple of seconds it should display the fault code. That code needs to be looked up in the service manual and actioned from there. There were also various tests described in the service manual that are ran through the controller and front panel to help pinpoint the issue. Do you have a service manual? 2) I recall there is a solenoid in the transmission valve for hi/low speed selection that selects between ranges 1/2 and 3/4. You could start there an work backwards. Could be solenoid, wiring, controller, or beyond… Therefore, checking solenoid coil resistance, continuity of wiring from solenoid to controller, would be steps in diagnosing the problem. The service manual will also help with this. 3) As you are far from a dealer, I would suspect that the high/low range solenoid is the same part number as some other function in the valve body such as 1/2 gear selection solenoid or clutch disconnect solenoid. You could swap the high/low range solenoid with one of the other solenoids and see if the problem moves. If so, you have a bad solenoid. Before you do this, check the part number on the solenoids, or check the Case parts web site to insure compatibility before swapping.

Welcome to HEF ronjack! If you have a display for transmission, you have a powershift model. If it won't change out of 2nd gear, the problem is usually a speed sensor issue. Expensive to purchase & not easy to replace. While the "T" is flashing, hold down the "M" button & the display will show a code - Speed Sensor is "SS" then it will go "OC" open circuit or "SC" short circuit. Sometimes....... sometimes a battery disconnect for a couple of minutes will magically fix the fault..... sometimes a new sensor will be required.

You Case experts, do all these electrics replace a lever and linkage to shift from one gear to the next? Sounds like it.

I have had that issue with one machine a couple of times and several others one singe repairs. In each case it has been the speed sensor, located on the step side of the machine on the LH side of the transmission case. Make sure if you change it to put the sealing washer on the new one because installed to deep could damage the sensors nose. Follow the codes and see if you can verify it's failure

Case 580 SL Power Shift T flashing in display press M and display says SS and OC Questions are at this point .Are there Solenoids or relays to check and their locations? Changing Speed Sensor ,does the large control box cover need to be removed to change it and is it full of oil ? Case says sensor comes with entire wiring harness for it $680 which is fine but hate to change it and still not have it shift because of a Solenoid or relay/fuse.The open circuit display seems like something is not connected to sensor some how .It failed a few times after road travel and shut off engine ,T was flashing on restart but was ok next morning .now T is on as soon as key is turned on ..thanks for any help --> Ron

The sensors, when faulty can be affected by temperature & cause the open circuit. In saying that even the shift solenoids can be affected the same. All the resistances would need to be checked at operating temp while the fault exists to be 100% certain. But if the computer is saying s/s then that is what I would be changing. You will need to drain the oil & remove the entire control valve to access the speed sensor. Give the area a very good clean & dry it off with compressed air, it will make the job a little more bearable.....

case580SL Thanks airman , Are the Solenoids located in the fuse box under front bucket lever or mounted on transmission ?

They are fitted to to control valve on the transmission.(items #36 &37) You will need to remove the cover & then the entire valve assembly. Speed sensor is item #41 You could remove each one individually & drop them into some warm oil to check resistance. My money is on the sensor - the computer only allows 1st & 2nd gear as a "safe mode" when it doesn't know how fast the machine is travelling. :thumbsup The picture shows the valve removed & on a bench - the sensor circled
