Completely new to the heavy equipment world, so I'm a little lost! I have a used 289D CAT. I recently went out of town and came back to a dead battery. I wasn't aware of the battery drain issues on heavy equipment, but I was able to jump it off with my F350. When I parked the machine it was running perfectly. No issues or codes. That I'm aware of. Is it possible that I damaged something when I jumped it off? I now have the following codes/issues: E695-3 Unexpected Motor Speed Detection Disabled Drive Speed is limited until the fault is corrected 41-4 Machine 8 volt DC supply voltage below normal 458-3 Machine Tilt cylinder Rod end pressure sensor voltage above normal The machine will move forward/reverse but I haven't moved it more than a few feet. The bucket will not move at all. 2016 Caterpillar 289D 1800 hrs TT CAT0289DTTAW04903 ANY guidance would be appreciated!
Your #1 & #2 are related. The E695-3 is most likely a result of the 41-4 because the 8v supply powers (amongst other things) the speed sensors for the LH & RH drive motors. #3 is not likely to interfere with the drive function but it could cause the bucket lift function not to operate. Will the bucket tilt? Diagnostics for 41-4 & 458-3 are attached. I'll send you a copy of the Electrical Schematic. An extract from the manual regarding the E695 - "This event is an active only event (will not be logged). The event designates the unexpected motor speed detection control has been disabled due to a motor speed sensor circuit fault. A motor speed sensor circuit fault includes the motor speed signals and power supply (8V Power Supply). The event will only be active when the hystat transmission lever is in forward or reverse. Reference the troubleshooting procedure for motor speed diagnostics or 8V Power Supply diagnostics, accordingly. Once the diagnostics are cleared, return the hystat transmission lever to the NEUTRAL and the event code will be cleared."
Thanks for the info! These errors were either induced from a dead battery or charging/jumping. I spoke with a local mechanic who told me to turn off the battery quick disconnect and wait for 30-minutes. When I returned and started the machine the codes were gone and all is well!!! THANKS!
An easy fix. We like those..! Are the bucket hydraulics working OK now.?
Incredible! was working on a Cat 239D with the exact same set of codes. we had just washed it as we had a hydraulic oil leak near the engine fan that we repaired. all these codes and i figured we had water where it was not to be. coming over this i almost didnt try as it appeared too easy... but it worked! we may need a new battery yet. but no codes on test run...
basically have same codes as this guy. i only have 5v on the plugs to to sensors. anyone has a test procedure on the 8v system to see where my problem lies?
The same three codes or just the 41-4.? Have you tried de-powering the machine for 30 minutes as per the fix that worked for him.?
i think ive seen the 41-4 before. but the main ones are E695-3 Unexpected Motor Speed Detection Disabled Drive Speed is limited until the fault is corrected 458-3 Machine Tilt cylinder Rod end pressure sensor voltage above normal. i tested the voltage and got 5 volts on 2 of the wires at each wheel sensor. where is the pressure sensor for the tilt cylinder rod end? i did unhook battery for a good hour or two and cleaned connections, it didnt change anything
Can you post a machine Serial Number. You are likely going to need an electrical schematic. Are those Codes popping up on an Advanced Display or are you reading them some other way.? Regarding #1 this is normally associated with a drive motor speed sensor fault. First suggestion would be to remove each speed sensor assembly, clean the nose end thoroughly, and reinstall. #2 the tilt sensor fault the troubleshooting procedure is attached to Post #2 above.
they are popping up on the display. i started through that and saw i didnt have 8 volts, only five so a wiring schematic would be super helpful. Serial NUmber is TAW05004
is the tilt pressure sensor the one under the pump or where is it. shold make sure i am testing at the right one
The electrical schematic will have all that information. Check your message inbox for one that is appropriate to your machine Serial Number. Your 41-4 for the 8v supply and the 458-3 could be related. The 8v supply from the ECM powers the tilt cylinder pressure sensor, the drive motor speed sensors, the inclinometer, and the thumbwheel roller position sensor. My suggestion would be to locate and disconnect all of them except the thumbwheel sensor (this will create other Codes but it can't be helped), then with the key OFF reconnect one sensor, then key ON and see if the 41-4 comes back immediately. Key OFF and reconnect a second sensor, etc, until you have them all connected. It may be that something, either a bad sensor or a wiring problem, is pulling down the 8v. If the 41-4 is there even when you have disconnected all five sensors (incl thumbwheel roller) then there is a wiring issue.
It ended up having two broken wires. one in the tilt cylinder and the other in the power supply for the speed sensor. thanks for your help
Excellent news. If you have any photos of the locations where the wires were broken please post them up. It may help someone else in the future.
one was broken in the big round connector up on the firewall and the other was broken about 1" from the pressure sensor. wire had no damage but was broken inside the insulation
