Asphault releasing solvent, dump trucks

Willis Bushogin · 2009-08-02 21:15

Well the paving outfit, I have contracted hauled, for 3 years, has tightened their money. Well, they have quit furnishing us with releasing agent, to remove the asphalt, from the dump trucks. Question, what is everyone using (dont stay fuel oil, you know we arent allowed to use that LOL) I do know a guy that delivered a truck load, to a state paving job and the state inspector, sent him back, he smelled diesel fuel, around the dump bed. I have contacted several industrial solvent companies, Im waiting for their call. It tough, sometimes to remove asphalt stuck/hard in the bed. Im not new to hauling asphalt, but I am new to getting this crap off and out of the truck

I think one important thing to do would be to get a list of what your State considers acceptable. I've seen creams that look like hand lotion and a soapy water mixture at plants, neither of them work well. I worked for a paving company for a couple years and unless we were on an inspected job we'd lightly oil the body with a pump sprayer. On inspected jobs we'd use whatever the plant provided, but as I mentioned, none of them worked very well. After the job was over we'd oil the bodies up good and run some loads of stone with them to clean them out.

Just a thought, but did the stuff the paving company provide work? If so ask them what it is and where to get it.

  4. #4Willis Bushogin2009-08-03 19:22

They didnt provide the solvent to remove the setup asphalt, just the releasing solvent. Then the DOT wouldnt approve this and they are having to go with a very expensive releasing solvent and they will not let us have any of this. They are going to spray the beds, but they dont use much of it. This causes, the asphalt to setup and it takes fuel oil (or a approved solvent) to dissolve it. The paving company, at one time was providing the removal solvent, about a year ago, but no one remembers what it was. I just wondered what everyone else was doing, about this.

I remember a soy based product but I can't remember the name. I'll try to find it soon.

Sorry like I said it was just a thought but obviously not a very good one.

For an approved release agent or solvent try orange solvent. Orange solvent works almost as good as diesel. Buy it by the gallon then you can dilute it if necessary. We use orange solvent on the paver instead of diesel. Powdered laundry soap will work for a release agent on the bottom of the truck bed, just broadcast some detergent across the bed, however it won't dissolve hard asphalt. Telescooper

Thanks for that info, is this orange solvent something you get at like Home Depot, or is it a speciality item, that must come from a vender. Thanks

I've heard of Lanolin based release agents being used around here. Its seems that a patent is pending in the US for a lanolin release agent. Here's a link to the Orange stuff: http://thatorangestuff.com/ind.shtml This one is supposed to contain some lanolin: http://www.knoxnelsonoil.com/featured.html

asphault solvent Thanks guys, I bought some citrus orange releasing agent. It works good, maybe a little better than diesel fuel and it smells better. Kinda pricey $550 for 55 gal

CCS, I trust you've read the forum rules, especially the advertising policy: (I'm pointing it out because a lot of people apparently don't bother reading it before they post commercial solicitations.) Thanks for the information, and welcome to Heavy Equipment Forums.

I make it I worked for 18yrs as a chemist and we made release agent. Im starting my own business and am looking for sum people interested in maybe a trial. Typically we made water emulsifiable stuff but I do have sum similar to fuel oil(no petroleum) that you would apply just like fuel oil. Any help in developing some various products would be helpful. How much do you use each truckload? What prices you payin now?

What you need to do is spray a little bit of diesel, and mix it with a stronger sent to steer the inspectors away haha. Soap and water is what a lot of companies use but its useless. The only reason diesel isn't allowed is cause it degrades the asphalt but you still see the asphalt plant and many packers spray it on their surfaces which is humouring.

Willis, our paving crew is in the same boat. I know it sounds silly but the drivers spray water on their beds before loadout. It has been discovered that all those potions simply do not work any better. The closer to loadout the better. It works well on shorter runs, though. Also, for less than $100 you can get a 500,000-1,000,000 btu torch (commonly called a 'hawk' in the midwest) with a 20-40# lp tank and that will cut your end of day cleanup in half. It is legal to carry them in the cab here if they are secured. Check with your area's finest.

asphalt cleanup I got some releasing agent from a chemical place. They gave me 5 gals of releasing and 5 gal of coating. It s smells like a orange, I dont remember what the name was, but they gave me this as a sample to get me to buy more. I hauled 3 loads of asphalt after that and never got chance to use it. The industrial cleaning companies should be able to get something for you

  25. #25Mack1852010-02-20 17:23

I've used the soapy release agent the plant gives you as well as the citrus smelling stuff and well neither of them work lol. With normal base/topping, Just a light coat of diesel on the bottom of the tailgate, apron and latches does the trick but it's a no-no on state jobs. That sticky crap (can't think of the name) that always seems to go to state jobs is a nightmare. Diesel won't even do the trick with that stuff. Just always try to hop in the bed and shovel it to the tailgate when it's still hot. Of course that goes for any asphalt.

any Idea how much a 55-gal drum is on average for asphalt release agent. Also any idea what ChemStation charges?

You should check out my Daddy's commercial truck sprayer at ctsdefender.com He had a commercial trucking & dozer service for over 35 years but had to retire bc of cancer. He could NOT stand to not work so got to work on designing a product that would solve the problem that he & so many other truckers ran into over the years. It's a REAL solution & is quick and easy. No more hanging on the side of the truck w a pump sprayer and gives you quick return back to grab your next load
