I'm a new member so can't start a thread yet....so I know this is not the subject of this thread....but any responses are appreciated ! For heavy equipment business owners/ company operators.... are there 3 -5 top concerns or issues facing the industry now? Top concerns business owners are facing ? Briefly what are they? Also - Are there any websites or areas showing industry trends? ( primarily interested in businesses selling/ renting dozers, trucking equipment, backhoe's, loaders, etc) I'm considering getting into this industry but can't find anywhere to find this data....so I thought I would ask some "insiders". Thanks so much ! Rob
hmmm AN investment Banker...!!
I'm not an investment banker. I'm a financial advisor.
is there a difference??
Well, they both use OPM, or Other People's Money to buy what they hope is cheap so they can take advantage of those less fortunate.
I split this out from the place it was originally posted. I'm sure robreke1 himself can defend his profession from any negativity that might be directed towards it, but let's please consider him as an individual, offer him the benefit of the doubt, and not pre-judge him based on what others in the field of finance may have done wrong...
I dont know about the rest of the world but the contractors i talk to in Southern Ontario tell me there is a decent amount of work around. But instead of bidding against 2 or 3 others, they are bidding against 7 or 10 others. They say they've never seen anything like it.
Well I made a few calls to day so to speak and well !! we are in the crapper, one contractor told me he had a 14ton out and all they have done is 70 hrs on the clock since May and the rest of his fleet parked up. A larger contracting outfit 3-5mill range told me they have enough work till Nov -Dec and then squat, haven't even priced a job this year, lots of subbies idle here and no sign of any new work to be priced ,tough times ahead me thinks...
Look at equipment sell web sites to see what is happening. 2008 Lull 944 with 415 hrs wnet for 43 which is about 50% of new cost. Equipment is really being sold for nothing now. So who would buy new?
Why buy anything when you cant utilize your equipment that you own now. Pretty tough to justify purchasing more equipment when you have iron sitting. Right now most of our iron is busy, minus the down 426c, d4c, and 325b. In the next two weeks most of our iron will be out of work tho. This due to the fact that our two major school projects are rapping up. All though we have 4 million dollars of environmental work to do in the fourth quarter, none of it is ready to start yet

As luck would have it i actually started looking for an excavator this spring. I ended up with two, a 2007 volvo 240 2048 hrs for 58,000. And a '06 terex 225 2000 hrs for 41,000. Those prices are so low its dumb. Both were repos. Wouldn't it be nice if you had the cash right now to roll the whole fleet into newer at these prices?! Nobody ever has cash when the deals roll in. Sad but true.
Serious Concerns Expressed About Job Prospects 10 August 2009 The Construction Industry Federation (CIF) has expressed “serious concerns” for thousands of jobs following publication of the CSO Quarterly Production in Building and Construction Index. Responding to the Index, Don O’Sullivan, Director of Tendering and Contracting at the CIF, said: “The results from the CSO indicate that the fall off in construction activity is actually worse than thought and that we’re facing further significant job losses on the civil engineering and general contracting sides of the industry over the coming 12 months”. “The Index, which compares activity in Quarter 1 2009 with the corresponding period last year, doesn’t factor in the significant decline in activity in contracting arising from the dwindling pipeline of public infrastructure projects. The impact of this decline will likely not show up until the Quarter 4 2009 and Quarter 1 2010 figures are published but on the ground it is resulting in further job losses at all levels of the industry, including senior management, professionals such as architects, engineers and surveyors, craft workers, operatives and in related sectors.” “Companies have been holding their workforces together on the basis of announced Government infrastructure spending but this isn’t happening at the moment and the flow of new projects is at a virtual standstill. The vast majority of current activity therefore relates to ongoing projects and once these are completed, the prospects for civil engineering and general contracting firms are poor. The gravity of the situation is underlined by the huge falloff in the pre-tender design and engineering work which is required before any new project can be brought to the market”. Ends
