Along side the main frame just above the front of the circle there should be a plate with the SN. on the left side if you were in the seat.

  4. #4Dwan Hall2012-03-24 21:09

First see if you can get it running and see what works. You may find it is not worth the effort if you can not replace a main component. If all you are doing is checking for a run condition all you need is a good battery, oil, desiel, a little knowlage and a lot of luck. Maybe a bit of eather but not much. Do not stand out side the machine when testing, Set in the seat to be safe. You have a long road ahead of you on this one.

Its going to run haha i will make my own parts if i ave to this is a piece of history!!

If you get stuck for machine parts ask around our UK members if there are any parts sources still kicking around for Aveling Barford graders. A-B used to manufacture Austin Western graders under licence from AW from the mid-50's up to (I think) the mid-90's. AFAIK the machines were pretty much the same.

the hose in pic 4 goes to the missing radiator.

  12. #12Deere470D LC2012-03-25 16:56

Where could i find a radiator at????

  13. #13Dwan Hall2012-03-25 17:06

You need to find a AW in better shape then yours is in for parts.

  14. #14Deere470D LC2012-03-25 19:36

    what do you mean.????????????????

  15. #15Deere470D LC2012-03-25 20:16

Coud i use any old radiator??

  16. #16Dwan Hall2012-03-25 20:57

What I mean is "There is enough parts needed for your machine that will require you to find a donor machine to complete your restoration" There have not been any parts made sence 1986 to fit these machines and they do not share parts with any other brand except the AB brand from England and down under. They discontinued them also back in the 70's or 80's. The radiator, circle motors, side shift ram stearing box, front pivit arm are just a few of the parts that go first. Like I said earler first see if you can get it running, then see what works. Next would be to grease every zirk on the machine and find out why the ones that dont take freese don't. Next would be to make a list of what you need to repair it. Then find the parts if you can or find out if you or someone else can make them for you. These steps can be done without spending much money on it. Spending $5,000 to $10,000 on that grader then finding out you cant find a needed bearing for the stearing box thus stoping the project would be a shame. There are AW graders out there that are in running condition much cheaper then what you will be spending to get this one running.

  20. #20Deere470D LC2012-03-25 21:08

could i just use a store bought hydrulic pump?? so baically there is no hyrdulic fluid in this machine???

  21. #21DirtHauler2012-03-25 21:37

None of the photos in post number 11 work for me, try to repost them. also did you notice this post about this machine being a bit different than you describe. Read what Dwan said about your machine and make sure you are doing an informed risk assessment before you proceed with this project.

New here. We have an AW Super 300 grader, it has a 4-71 Detroit with a torque converter. What oil is used in the torque converter? Thank You....James

  25. #25Dwan Hall2012-04-18 02:09

Depends on year and SN#. There were 2 different torque converters used in the 300, 1 was an Allison TC used up to SN 8072 using an external by pass valve used Stanotorque Converter fluid made by Standard oil co. of Indiana. An alternate would be Torque Fluid #35 made by Esso, or Texaco Torque Fluid by Texaco, or RPM torque Fluid #3 by Standard oil of California. For SN# 8073 and above having an internal by pass valve try the fallowing, I am going to scan the page as I am to tired to type it all.

Thank You Mr. Hall. I appreciate your help. Still trying to get a manual for this machine. We are a very small city with 7 miles of gravel streets. All the fluids and filters were changed before it was delivered to us but at this time we do not know what fluid was used. Thanks for the heads up on the serial # break. Again Thank you for helping in this matter....James

I would drain that hydraulic oil. I would bet there is some oil on top but is mostly water. If there is a plug on the bottom crack it loose and see how much water comes out before oil.

  28. #28jwal102012-04-19 13:17

Ours is the earlier one, low 6xxx serial #. Checked with the mechanic and he says they use Chevron products. No water, it was just changed and looks new, not milky at all. Is level checked before startup? It is 1" above lower mark when cold. Seems to pull good on a hill in 3rd/low. Warmed it up good yesterday and graded 2 miles all was good except steering. It came without rear steering cylinders, had 2 made up for it. Seems to pull sideways very quickly, very touchy. Do you grade with rear steering on? If not in rear steer mode it is hard to steer as the front wheels are so light, or off the ground at times if digging in good. I think it needs a new grader blade. Any way, it was given to us and we wanted to get it going to show we are trying to make it work. We were told to try it and if not what we need we can trade for something else. Been a long time since I used a real grader and 8 yrs for our equipment operator. The streets are very narrow and this may be too big of a machine for 15' streets. Have some other projects I would like to do also so we will keep forging ahead. Thanks for your help and time. I am just an old farm boy....James

  29. #29jwal102012-04-26 22:09

Got some grading done, the front steering linkage is sloppy Tightened it up some, went too far and had to back it off some. Still seems to fight the power steering some. With no disconnect for the 4x4 it makes it tough turning tight turns, is this normal? ....James

  30. #30Dwan Hall2012-04-27 07:16

Yuo will learn to use the rear stead in conjuction with the front. Makes steering fun. Mine will not make an inside street corner without using rear stead also.

  31. #31lb7/sledhead2012-05-15 22:03

Are you sure that's a 300? It looks like an 88. Where are you located in Pa? I'm near State College. Hope it works out for you...if not, I might be interested in the scarifier off it. Later!
