Batteries

Hey, have a 1971 Case 680 CK. Battery info on spec sheet says "(2) x 12V, 74 amp.hr. Can anyone suggest correct size? I am currently looking at Group 31T with 750 CCA / 940 CA. Any advice on correct size would be greatly appreciated.

That's exactly what I would do if they fit in the battery box. Two if you need to start it below 50F, one if you don't, or you can plug it in.

OK, yes, they will fit. Thanks for the feedback!

Do yourself a favor and have new cables made also.

Good advice. Just yesterday working on Duetz powered water pump, no start (no problems at shutdown last fall) sure enough wiggle perfect ‘looking’ ground cable…fires up. Internal corrosion. Same thing last summer on C12 in truck that gets only occasional use. Had just installed 4 new group 31’s and would barely turn over…handling cables must have disturbed weak/corroded strands. Made up new cables with some welding cable & lugs.

If there's enough length to the cables, cut the end off and crimp or solder a new terminal on for the threaded stud. The bad connection is almost always at the battery, because that's where the acid is and that's where they flex. Road vehicles can get salt water wicking into the low spot, but that shouldn't be a problem here. Use two ground cables, even with one battery, one to the engine, one to the frame, tie them together if there's two batteries, at the posts.

Does anyone have insight on the best place to find parts for this 1971 Case 680 CK hoe? Not getting anywhere fast on the internet, even for the air filter canister clamp.......

The cables on my hoe were black throughout. I cleaned the ends to copper and replaced the ends with no love. All new cable was the fix for my starting issues. If you strip the insulation back and find clean copper new ends might work. If the wires are black you might as well get all new cables.

get some 2/0 welding lead for the new ends

Nothing wrong with black strands, clean them up with acid and crimp or solder. Green, white, powdery or swollen is much worse. Nothing wrong with new cables either if that's easiest.
