Beach work

I am tendering a beach contract at the present and need to shift about 1000 cubic metres of sand per 10 hr day over about a 100 metre radius to a common point do you reckon a CTL can do that sort of tonnage also would a CTL or a MTL be better as far as wear and tear on running gear life basically after a small quiet mini rubber tracked dozer lots of pushing power required aiming to achieve 2 cubicmetres per pass. Any suggestions????

This might be a good idea http://www.ashlandind.com/25ss.html With a 2.5 cu yard load you would have to do 40 loads per hour to do 100 cu yards an hour. A cat d5k lpg has about a 3 cu yard blade capacity. With the short distance you have to move the material a small dozer would be faster because they can unload much quicker, then back up and grab a second blade full.

RJB, are you spreading or stockpiling?. We have pushed about 600m3 a day with a 287B but we had a slight downhill run and no stockpiling. You have to go like the blazes alll day. Maybe look at a small loader with radial tyres or the dozer if its just spreading.

Ive already considered the ashland scraper would be great for catch and carry but not able dump in one spot easily so ive designed a large box blade/carry dozer set up for a CTL. The contract currently uses a D6LGP but its big noisy thirsty expensive running costs and leaves the beach all torn up which is a tripping hazard for the public and opens the council to liability issues plus the D6 is over kill and spends half the day idling away making 50mm passes they are looking for a more environmental approach that is less imposing on the beach to keep the public and expesive real estate owners on side.

So tell them they can have "big noisy thirsty expensive " and 1000m3 a day or a CTL/MTL with 5-600m3 a day with a nice beach and less noise. Might want to talk to them about reversing alarms if noise is an issue.

So does anyone have any info on wear life of ASV vs. CTL under carriage in sand curious to know if one is better than the other?? On another note I had the opportunity to run a N/H C185 and a CAT 277B side by side pushing over 30ton loads of sand fresh dumped on a new horse race track. N/H had a much larger bucket and still killed the Cat for push power the Cat just gave up once the load came on I now under stand why people call it the "anti-work" mode instead of anti stall. you could lug the N/H right down but engine torque would keep it pushing through the heap. the Cat was great to operate and I was really impressed with the ride, control feel and light foot print. Its a shame the push, lift, crowd power and rear visibility was so poor. Are the new models any better??? I would love to demo a new 297C CTL looks like the best of both worlds.

How much work do you have ? How much can you justify spending ? I would say a 10-12 tonne wheel loader with a 3 cm bucket would be ideal (the one pictured has a 4.2 cm bucket). You could also have a quick hitch rake for beach grooming duties and also to smooth your work too prevent litagation . Have a look at the Ranger loaders , which are Chinese with Cummins motors and jap hydraulics . They are very good buying and are backed by Ranger Loaders Brisbane . http://www.ranger-loaders.com/LoaderDescription.aspx?PKID=127&PID=3

A 3 and 4.2 cm bucket? which dimension is that height, width, or depth? But don't worry, I know the metric system can be confusing(right squizzy?). but you meant 3 and 4.2 cubic meters right? I've got no idea how to do the m(with the little number 3 up on the side of it)

Yes , because i also could'nt put a little three up in the air i wrote cm . I should not have been so lazy and wrote cubic metres . That's a lot of sand to move . Even with a 3 cubic metre/yard bucket , it's still 333 trips . I don't envy you , after a couple of days it would be very monotonous .

Well finally after 5 months of trial start date changes, today i hit the beach armed with my proto type sand box scraper and a hired 200 hr old 297C MTL. After an hour or so getting used to the different driving style required with anti stall system. i settled into a steady 2.5m3 pass every 1.5mins using the 2 speed on reverse to speed things up. which works out to around 83 m3 per 50min hour. That was running up hill and in saturated sand building a stockpile. once we start running downhill it should pick up the production a fair bit. I spent 8 hrs in the cat today and i have to say it is the quietest most comfortable machine i have every run. It has great pushing power, great crowd power, lift is a little down but only noticable due to my application. Man it flys in 2 speed. i really enjoyed running it. My only complaint is it likes a drink. I burnt 100L in about 5.5-6hrs but it was flatout the whole time. I would like to run the new Tak TL250 to compare but there aren't any in SA to hire and the dealer doesnt even have one to look at let alone demo. Will add some photos for those that may be interested once i work out how.
