Bobcat 743b Won’t start

markperea ยท 2017-09-06 20:59

Need with help starting issue. Engine only starts with stating aid and will stay running, runs good no misses. Once its off and sits for more than 2hrs won't fire. Produces smoke while trying to start. Has an aftermarket electric transfer pump in it and shut off solenoid is actuating. Seems to be getting fuel up to injectors but won't start without start aid. Any ideas?

Which motor? could be glow plugs... or not cranking fast enough. are you able to video it while trying to start? so we can see/hear just how fast it is cranking. ther are lots of little things it could be... might be just old and tired too... with several things going on contributing to the hard start... battery, cables, grounds, solenoids(glow/start),glow plugs or wiring to them, starter...etc...

The 743B had a Kubota engine with pre-combustion chamber injection heads. You need to check your glow plugs to see if they're working and working properly. With those heads on that engine, once they get a few hours on them (which a 743B would have) they won't hit a lick without glow plugs. Gotta start there before suspecting other causes.

Definitely turns over fast enough. Not sure if glow plugs are working never checked them unfortunately machinery was shipped out so I don't have video right now. Would glow plugs be a factor even in phoenix?

Absolutely. On those engines, pre-combustion chambers, once they get some hours on them, which a machine of that vintage would, they won't hit a lick cold on a 100 degree day. Yes, other things can still be your problem, but you have to start there

Ether is the worst thing for a Kubota! Was told Kubota's have suck tight tolerances ether could destroy one in short order. Even if it's 90 deg's outside and the engine hasn't been started it will need glow plugs. Around 95 Kubota went to direct injection on a lot of their engines and they were better starters.

i worked in central florida when the 743 was a current production machine. if you didnt preheat that engine, guarantee you'd be calling for a field service call when all the smoke came out of the starter.. one chilly (35F) winter day, i replaced 10 starters, batteries and a LOT of battery cables.... today nearly every 743 that come through our shop has at least 1 bad glow plug.

Update. Had customer check power to glow plugs. He has 9v with power wire attached and 12v with it disconnected. Had him turn glow plugs on for 60 sec and it almost fired for about 4 or 5 sec. Gonna have him change plugs and see if that works.
