I have a 2008 V518 telehandler with a Perkins in it. Someone in its past got creative and monkeyed with everything... Currently the hydraulic cooling fan blows the hot engine air into the rad. I would think that, like most automotive applications, the cool external air should be sucked into the rad then vented across the engine and out. This would be easily done if the fans hydraulic hoses were swapped. Any idea which way is correct?
Contrary to popular belief reversing the fan orientation will not change the direction of air flow. It will still move the same way but the fan will become less efficient and move less air. I have no idea regarding your particular machine but most OEM radiator systems suck the hot air from the engine compartment and blow it out through the radiator.
Take a pic of your fan, belt routing, and what direction the crankshaft turns, and we can tell you if it is installed right.
Its just a small hydraulic motor with a fan blade attached. No belts or crank pullies. This is why its difficult to judge its proper direction of rotation. If you simply swap the position of the two hydraulic hoses, flow and fan direction are reversed. Some models of the Telehandlers actually have a reversing switch to change the hydraulic flow.
Well that is a horse of a different color then. I have never seen a hydraulic fan pull in outside air on any machine. They always blow from the engine compartment outward through the radiator.
Does anyone recall the Huber reversible fan company here in Erie, Pa. ? I had an Allis chalmers 12g loader with 2 of them on it. Reversible Fans Keep Engines Cooler Blowing out radiators when operating in dusty and trashy conditions is easy with reversible fans from Huber Reversible Fan, Inc., Erie, Pennsylvania. The fans were designed by Herman Hube... www.farmshow.com
The blades are made to work in one direction but some machines like graders, the direction can be changed to help clean out the radiator and hyd. cooler. It's not the most efficient but does move enough air to help clean the rad. and any other coolers.
