breaking down roller frame 955 middle of nowhere minimal tools

fest777 · 2021-12-01 23:05

what would be the minimal amount of tools needed to break down this rail in the middle of the desert, was thinking if i get the loader frame locked in the air i can use a 2 ton winch, main objectives are 1 missing lower roller ,broken recoil spring, buggered idler shims, idler needs building up, there,s no power there ,but i have 10,000 watt generator 3 ph, i have a small forklift i can have moved there, i thinking this will be a must have item

Folding pop up dining fly, working in the sun is a bi**h, cooler with water, a helper in case something heavy lands on you.

For sure a helper... Working alone in the desert far from rescue is hazardous. Remember the man that cut his own arm off. And he was lucky to survive. I don't work at home without having someone to check on me.

You just can't resist, can you Bob?

Hand and Minimal tools NOT gonna get it here. The use of 3/4 and 1" impacts, LARGE HEAVY wall sockets, a Gas Axe for the Death Spring, then all the blocking/cribbing to hold the machine while use another tractor as a forklift to maneuver the truck assembly hanging off chains off the machine. Get it moved to a Shop and feel better of it.

I actually agree. Bob doesn't worry about forum etiquette LOL

    Agree, would be best

put some photos so that we can carry out a virtual inspection and provide you with the right suggestions thanks to an image that is worth more than 1000 words.

I don't think we've heard from Fest on this...hope he isn't out there, given all the safety warnings I've seen here! (And that all seem quite reasonable!) And don't forget a camera! We need pics and the story that goes along with it! Jon.

bluox, i thing your just a real piece of work.all you ever do is lash out at people trying too get something done, do me a favor and do not respond too anything i post, your imput is not worth the reading, i think your a troll, by the way i drove big rigs for 33 years and have had my share of tuff times , what did you do the last 40 ,forget that i dont even care so stfu a hole

By the way the 3/4 bolts that keep the spring in place always break off please don't remove until you have cut all the coils of the spring with a torch. when replacing the spring use new bolt nut and hardware and have a track shop compress the spring and assemble very dangerous to try to do it yourself

Yet again are not known as 'Death Springs' for nothing.

translator, if you have to do a similar repair, you need strong muscles arms, steel bars to leverage like crow bars and also a lifting device and a lot of sweat and elbow grease, put the photos maybe we find an optimal solution and watch out for the fingers.

An HEF member built his own home-made spring compressor for a 955 recoil spring. Here is a link to the thread. As you can see it's not a simple task. If you have any questions I suggest that you message him directly. HeavyEquipmentForums

???? if you do not put the photo I do not understand the seriousness of the fault to be repaired and I do not understand how you could intervene, however if you have to replace the idler wheel track tensioner spring, it must be disassembled and taken to the workshop, to the workshop with a hydraulic press of at least 80 tons to compress it and tighten and tighten the locking nut that blocks the threaded rod, I repeat, if you do not put the photo I do not understand the extent of the damage, if you are not practical do not improvise mechanic, it is a heavy, heavy and dangerous job.

trombeur, thanks for the reply, machine is 150 miles from me in the middle of mohave desert, let me try and explain. the spring is broke towards the front about 6" from adjustment point where grease gun goes on left rail. the most forward lower roller is missing its double flange, bolts are sheered off i might be able too replace with good unit but have to removed whats left of bolts, thought about retracting adjustment enough too put roller in, some how i will have to raise track on left side, also adjuster seals are blown and idler needs attention with hard facing, heavy machinery is not new to me been around it most of my life since i was around 19 y.o. so at least 40 years driving and wrenching on big rigs. got a 50 ton press, jacks and large tools, air compressors but machine is way out there 7 miles north of barstow ca, and all tools are in town. just thinking it would be easier too just remove complete rail and more or less rebuild it because all the drilling and tapping and welding that needs to be done, transport to and from site is close to 2k thanks for the vids anthony

Being where it is. Ox Axe the old sping to pieces. Have new spring compressed and banded. Bring new bolts, rod, nut and washer. Basically do what I did to replace mine

Gonna need block cribbing, Lots of it. Get tractor jacked up get the bucket on cribbing not just blocks as well at least to track height, then break rail. Get the track off the top of the truck assembly and then remove the necessary bolting while supporting the truck with as much as a old tow truck. Get that truck assembly off and head to the shop. Still gonna need at least 3/4” impact to break all the bolts loose and compressor to run it as well if not segmented rail a pin pusher to break that rail.

Hate to say it but would not be caught dead trying to commit suicide in front of a small manually operated hydraulic press trying to load one of these recoil assemblies.

I'm sorry I did not want to offend you and be presumptuous, however the work is burdensome and dangerous as you have certainly understood that you are a veteran expert operator and machinist, I personally if I had the possibility or I would find the parts to be replaced second-hand but still efficient at an earthmoving machinery mechanic or a scrap dealer, of those pieces that are recovered from demolition machinery, without disassembling the spring, but all the healthy piece recovered cannibalized by another crawler loader being demolished, or I would tow your mechanical shovel on a flatbed truck with ramps, and I would take it to the workshop with all the comforts. repairing a similar machine in the desert is inconvenient and dangerous, you need the support of a workshop truck equipped with a crane, or a forklift or other heavy machinery to help you in the heaviest jobs and personnel, if you do it on site, you have to bring you a compressor a generator the acetylene oxy gas torch a jack and a hoist and some shims, and it's a hard job, excuse me if I offended and underestimated you it was not my intention to do it, sorry.

US has not seen the advent of this form of transport, look well laid out for what they are doing. Would suggest more tie downs however.

  23. #23trombeur2021-12-11 12:26

excuse me how do you transport self-propelled machinery? we call them flatbed trailers, they have lowered wheels to facilitate the ascent and descent via ramps from the loading platform, many of these, let's call them tow trucks, large in size are equipped with large and powerful hydraulic loader cranes, many have a powerful winch behind the cab like trucks carrying tanks. they are very useful and robust. a truck or similar trailer would be enough to maneuver the tracks of the earth-moving machine, I think it starts moving, so you lift the arm of the bucket and slowly go up the ramps until you are positioned on the loading bed. when you arrive at the workshop, you enter directly with the truck and place it in the work area you intend to use to repair the machinery and slowly get off it. if you have problems with traveling with the tracks, if the truck has a winch you could pull the tractor with it onto the body of the truck flat by level, to get it off you chain it behind another heavy machinery and drag it down the loading ramps. I err. Otherwise to do the work on site do not think it is a walk, you must always use an auxiliary lifting device to facilitate the work, such as a crane or a forklift otherwise it becomes a strenuous effort.

Quite typically it is Lowboy Trailer, either fixed or detach neck with a tandem tractor. Small loads are handled with what is referred to as a Roll Back truck Body, also used in Wreck and dead machine recovery. Typical around here is similar to this. As locals haul median sized excavators These the entire body tilts up and rolls back to load, called a Roll Back Recovery truck. Site: Century LCG 16 Series Rollback from Bressler's, Inc. construction companies use the dachshund trolley to transport self-propelled machinery, crawler excavators and other machinery, usually they tow it behind a three-axle dump truck, for some time they have been using low-bed trucks with ramps, clearly affecting operating expenses, the stamp circulation card insurance review, maintenance, but if you have a lot of work to do it is more practical than the towed trolley, more agile and fast especially if you have to transport the machinery in mountain areas or hills, where you have to face uphill descents tight hairpin bends, they also use it for transport bricks or other materials such as trucks, many combine it with the hydraulic rear crane and use it to rent it and carry out industrial removals and dismantling, to transport machinery and pieces of industrial plants and bulky objects for third parties such as small exceptional oversized transports. low loading bed, like large tow truck for rec Overtaking large damaged vehicles is very versatile and useful if you have the right job clearly otherwise it is uneconomical with operating costs. https://www.officinebpm.it/allestimenti-autocarri/allestimenti-carrelloni/carrelloni-con-gru/
