I have just purchased an 1150d, there is a lever behind left foot area, can anyone tell me what it does?

Welcome to HEF @kurtt Assuming this is a dozer. That should operate a diverter valve which allows the blade to tilt forwards & backwards. While holding your heel on the lever, operate the blade tilt circuit. The cylinders don't have much travel, so it only works when the blade is near level.

Thanks very much. The brakes are non existent, I'm assuming this would be a bit of a major to sort?

Re brakes, depends on what the issue is. On an 1150D they are basically another clutch pack. (2) It is very unlikely the plates are worn completely out. Perhaps previous operators used them alot & the piston seals are leaking, but even then I would suspect that they would still work to some degree. Are the hyd hoses still attatched to the brake housings? Also worth looking at, are the automatic brake adjusters - item #44 slides in to #42 as an interferance fit, as the brakes wear (very minimally) when you apply the park brake, it will pull 44 out of 42 a little & keep the brakes adjusted. - possibly the pins (#44) are siezed or the brake cable has been broken for a while & the adjusters have not been activated. You may need to T in a hyd test gauge to see if the brakes are getting pressure - but check the above first.
