The starter motor on this CASE 1840 isn't turning over - it just clicks. In order to gain access to the starter, the manual says to raise the arms, lock them, then slide the cab forward. The problem is, without the motor running, we can't raise the arms. Does anyone know how to access the starter when the engine is dead? Is there a way to lift the arms without starting the engine? Thanks, Chris.
If you have something to safely lift the boom you can put it in "float" and raise the boom and install the support that should be hanging under the right side of boom and once that is in place move the cab forward. DO NOT get under the raised boom without the support properly installed! If what ever you use to lift it were to fail you could be killed!
I know this sounds like alot of work, but you can have the radiator out in about 15 minutes then reach in through the back and work on the starter.
Thanks all for your replies, guys. We didn't have additional equipment to raise the arms so the cab had to remain in place. It will only slide forward a couple of inches while the arms are down. Going in through the radiator would have worked but to reach the starter, you also have to remove the muffler. The 4 bolts holding it down were quite old and rusted. We were worried they might break off. In the end, we went in by removing the seat and going in under from the front. There was just enough room to get a wrench on the two starter bolts but it is tough to get your hand at an angle to loosen them. The replacement starter is now in place and everything is running again. *whew*
