Xpac......In my big shop manual, under Section 61, it says to go to Section 63 for the Twin Disc and Sectin 64 for the Rockford.....but these sections are missing from my manual. Maybe they are special order sections????

I have a service manual for the ck it is about 602 pgs but i cant seem to locate anything that shows or tells how to id a twin disc or rockford shuttle and i was thinking i read a while back how to do this on a post by Phil who is awesome on these machines.I thought i checked mine then and determined it was a twin disc but i now question it because it looks like the new fiber clutches dont have tabs that stick out of the shuttle but the twin disc shuttle does.If this is the case i know that my fiber disc dont have the tabs that stick out of the shuttle and hopefully that would make mine the rockford which would be awesome because i have read they are easier to rebuild than the twin disc and there seems to be more info out there on these than a twin disc.I hope someone can school me on these i will keep looking until then. Thanks 68

xpac.....yep, we probably have manuals w/o Section 63 & 64. Someone should be able to tell just by looking at the picture.

Xpac.....I was doing some quick internet searching for the Rockford rebuild procedures, and I came accross this thread under the Heavy Equip Forum. I did not see any comments by you under it, so you might find it helpful: This is the title of the thread, and the link below: 580B Rockford PowerShuttle - Stumped and missing Phil! I just got a pm from melben and he schooled me on these shuttles the big center ( aluminium) between the 2 clutch compartments in the photo is a piston and on mine pictured there are no holes in the piston it is all smooth but the twin disc has holes in it for oil to dump out of, there are valves on the inside of the twin disc that i think control the oil for these holes i think there called dump valves. Good info here And man im glad i have the rockford

Great to know you have the ole Rockford type. I was curious and checked prices on these.....found a rebuilt one for $1400, and they give you back $700 when you send the core back. Im betting you can rebuild it a whole lot cheaper than that.

Yea im thinking the same thing and then i know what ive got...... now if mine would have been twin disc $ 700.00 hmmm maybe from what i have heard.

xpac.......what was the diagnosis on the Rockford? Are you able to order new parts (clutch packs???) and do it yourself?

  10. #10onemank62015-12-16 11:39

Well i have it tore apart right now and am going to order the parts soon and yes it is looking like getting the parts for the rockford are available i really didnt see any problems in there and the clutches look ok as well i dont know how much the fiber ones are wore until i get the new ones to compare thickness i dont see where the old ones are burnt or tore up.I will update when i get the new parts.

xpac......Ok...I was just curious. Now what if the new ones and the old ones thickness are still about the same.......could there be an issue someplace else?

yea im thinking that most of my problem was the radiator being plugged up had the shuttle oil getting to hot but i dont know until i get her back together.I am also going into the torque converter after the shuttle is done and the shuttle valve body.At the end of the day i had to split her for the bell housing gasket leak which was leaking shuttle oil and when it got real hot outside it acted like the clutches were slipping so as long as i had to split anyway i mght as well rebuild this stuff meanwhile im looking for things that might cause this slippng and when i pulled the radiator is when i seen where it was plugged up which had to make the shuttle oil a little hot???

xpac......When you say "plugged up", do you mean all the oil/debris on the radiator fins at the bottom? If so, Im sure that reduced the cooling, but do you think it was enough to make that much of a difference? Or did you mean that the lines going to the radiator were plugged up? Would have been nice to have a temp. gauge for that fluid so you knew for sure if it was hot.

  14. #14onemank62015-12-16 18:04

I meant the exterior of the radiator it had a mist of a oil leak from the hyd suction line which put oil film on radiator then the dust i know the coolant ran about 190-200 on a real hot day and i wish i would of had a temp gauge on that oil then but its getting one now. Also as a side note before i tore this down i had worked it on the same day my neighbor worked his 580b and i spoke to him that night and the difference between the 2 tractors was 20 deg on the water temp so if i can go by that mine was 20 deg hotter on the oil as well.On that day ididnt have any slipping going on but it was cooler outside and i think the temp on mine that day was 140deg and his 120deg.

xpac.....Yea, the pic shows your radiator looking worse than I remember......hopefully it was the temp. getting too hot as you say, and not something else causing the issue. The bottom of the radiator just has the line running kinda a "S" pattern inside and coming out? I guess if the temp still does not get cool enough, you could put a T in the line and add another small cooling radiator.

68 yep thats basically what it is a water to oil heat exchanger i thought of a secondary oil cooler but i will see where she runs at first.
