Hi... We recently purchased a ~1970 580CK. The previous owner stated that the injection pump's fuel shutoff had issues, and it sat for 6 months. He no longer needed it, hence the sale. We knew the unit had some issues, and...well...the issues were way more than we thought. From what we can tell, it's got a 188D engine - is there a way to confirm that? The engine needs an overhaul, including new sleeves and pistons. The engine is in the tractor, and we will perform an in-frame overhaul. The crankshaft, connecting rods, and the valve rocker train all look like they had good oil flow, but we'll see when we take the bearing caps off. Most of the issues appear to be from the tractor sitting for a long time in the weather, i.e. rainwater got into the combustion chamber and rusted a couple of the sleeves pretty good. The coolant passages look good, as do the oil passages. We'll take the injection pump and injectors to the local diesel service guy for servicing, cleaning, and/or repair. The head will undergo a valve grind and cleanup at the machine shop - it actually doesn't look too bad once we cleaned it up some; tjhe valves and injectors look like they are quite serviceable. We've seen quite a few in-frame rebuild kits out there, ranging from less than $500 to over a grand. Does anyone have any experience with overhaul kits? recommendations? avoid any particular types? Should we stick with the original kit from CNH? Thanks in advance.
I went with the om case parts , sleeves , pistons , sleeve o rings .Did the head as you are , injectors, pump and I put new crank and rod bearings in as well . We were lucky the stock size of lower bearings were with in tolerance . Didn't touch the cam , probably should have but the machine ran well for the next several years until it was sold . We new we had to do this , as we call it a ( re fresh ) because the hoe needed starting fluid in the warm weather , lack on power and so on. When you do get it apart take a close look between cylinders for cracks . We find when the machines get old , engines and shuttles start to wear its time to unload them . We found by the time you put money in these old girls you could easily move up 10 to 15 years in models . I sold a CASE SUPER E FOR 12 Grand and ran like a top 9000hrs no starting fluid needed .Still had to plug in in the winter .It all starts with the origonal owner and how they have been serviced .Keep the cowboys off of them and they will run a long long time
