case 580l-2 transmission help needed

I have a 19998 case 580l-2 backhoe which is giving me a problem. When you change direction forward to reverse or reverse to forward the machine shifts very hard as though the engine was idled up very high but the idle is correct at about 900 rpm. The machine also want`s to creep when in gear causing the engine to lug down at idle. The only suggestion from the dealer tech`s is to replace the transmission. To me it acts as though the torque converter is not releasing. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

You need to check the stall speed of the torque converter. If the stall is low, say 11-1200 rpm in high gear fwd, brakes held, wide open throttle, I would guess the sprag in the converter has failed. That does not require a new tranny but depending on hours you may want it gone through while its down. If the idle is correct it should not move the machine idling.
