hi, i have an old case 850 traxcavator with a couple of issues i'd like to try to sort out. The first is to do with the torque converter which overheats after about an hour of use or shorter if i'm working her hard which then brings the temp of the motor up. A few things I think are related to this is a build up of pressure in the clutch housing which you can see at the clutch housing inspection plate leaking oil, the other is the seal at the bottom of the clutch housing dust plate leaking which then empty's all oil from torque and transmission. The other issue is this seal on th bottom of the clutch housing dust cover. I have tried several times with different gasket materials to get it to seal but as of yet have been unable to get a complete seal. As I said these 2 issues may well be related but that dust inspection plate is a difficult shape and has given me nothing but grief.
You will need to do several things but the converter will more than likely need to come out. The bell housing should be dry, and large amounts of pressure and oil are signs of a leaking drain plug, cracked turbine housing, quad ring blown, carrier worn, bearing failure or other issues. The rad needs to be checked for blockage of air flow/ lower 12" and corners for build up of trash, oil, dust. Loose belts, worn pulley groves, antifreeze %, and charge pump should be checked for flow and pressure if possible before pulling unit from machine . The cooler for the torque is in the lower end of rad across the bottom. All stick hose should be checked in the cooling lines as well as the two hoses that go into the rad threw the lower rh and lh sides to the trans cooler for restriction. A serial number and build year may help if you have one but your location and build of machine could be different from the US version.
thanks sheepfoot for the info. The no's I can find are d 850, 7074572 on plate attached to battery section and model d13662, no mb091 on plate attached to dash, engine plate is no longer attached. A while back I had the radiator rebuilt and replaced the 2 sections of stick hose coming from radiator with flexible hydraulic line, could I have restricted the flow to much? If the torque converter has to come out , do know if the motor has to be taken out on this model ,or can I drop it out the bottom
also , It,s the flywheel section pressurizing not the clutch
I would want at least the same size to not have issues with a restricted flow in a cooling system myself. The pressure on the system is around 260 psi-290 psi, the converter out regulator is around 25-60 psi with the temp around 150*. The thing is there should not be any oil leaking into the bell housing/converter case and will more than likely need to be pulled out (converter) to find what is causing the pressure and oil leaking into this area. Spot check and magna flux may also be needed for hair line cracks to be seen once out for inspection. You should be able to park machine on some rail road ties to have the clearance to drop it out the bottom, I like to use 2) 1'x1' ties around 12' long, one under each track. You may even take a good look at the charge pump seal, if it's leaking it may be able to put some oil and pressure back into the housing.
