Does anyone have PDF manuals for Case W20 1985. Has anyone ever fixed brakes on this type of loader? If so, was it painful? Also any Thoughts on these machines and reliability would be appreciated
I don't have a service manual but I have worked on these machines before. Your machine should be a W20B if it is a 1985 year model. The brakes are a air over hydraulic type system. Meaning you have air brake type pedals that actuate the air chambers that operate the master cylinders. There is a brake fluid reservoir on the right side of machine at back of engine I believe. Some of these machines had disc brakes, which aren't too bad to replace. You need to check the air compressor and system.
Coy thank you! The brake pedal is all the way to the floor does this mean it may not be holding air?
It should be up without air pressure. Lubricate the pin at the bottom of the pedal. It may be seized up. If the pedal isn't seized , the treadle valve probably needs to be replaced. They can be purchased in a lot of auto parts stores such as NAPA. You need at least 125 psi of air in the system for the brakes to work.
So there are no calipers or wheel brakes or drums. So I won’t have to remove any wheels? Thanks again very helpful
You will have to remove the wheels to get to the brake calipers. There are two holders that keep the brake pads in place just pry the pads back and you can remove them and replace them with new ones. But you need to check the rest of the system out first. Also check your serial number tag up in cab and post the serial number.
Coy we replaced both master cylinders add bled the brake but the drums brakes have not worked for 8 years. So we’ve done everything from the pedal to the air container and new massive cylinders and blow all the brakes to the drums, but we have not taken the wheels off and the drums are not breaking, but the fluid is coming out of the peacock. Any ideas and how much work it is to take off the tires and fix drum brakes as they don’t appear to be caliper brakes
Those brakes are big truck style brakes. So if you’re familiar with those then it’s just a lot of heavy lifting.
Do you know are they considered drums and do you know where I could get them
Well the parts book for W20B shows disc brakes. Do you have a service manual or a parts book? You can go to mycnhstore.com and look up your machine.
It is definitely a w20 without discs you are right. What is inside those hubs that need repair. I do t have a manual and wouldn’t know what to look for
There is a planetary gear set up in the hub
Here are a couple of pages from W20 parts list - these may not be the correct ones for your machine, but it gives you a good idea of how it's put together.
