Lcon · 2025-06-17 22:56

Hello, i inherited (for better or worse) a cat 225LU excavator. I am trying to find any information regarding this beast and have had zero results. Just trying to find out as many details as i can on this thing. Attached is the plate if anyone can help me figure out what all this thing has. Thanks!

You have what I think is a long undercarriage version of a 225. Photos of the machine would confirm that. It may also have a longer boom than standard. Built January 1985.

Nige, thank you very much for the reply! I have a couple of pictures from when we drove it out of the weeds. Not sure they will show it in enough detail. I will attach them here. I am headed to the machine this evening for transport to my farm and i will be sure to grab additional pictures.

    Looks awesome

IMHO you should start thinking about manuals for it. Operation/Maintenance, Parts, and a full Service Manual as well if you are going to be the person doing all the repairs on it.

Agreed! Here are a couple more pictures you requested. Thanks again.

Here are the Cat Publication reference numbers for the manuals for your Serial Number. SEBU5789 - Mantenance SEBU5813 - Operation HEBP1440 - Parts REG01578 - Service. This manual should also include the first two items on the list if it is complete. I see quite a few examples on the internet at far below new prices (all the above are still available new BTW)

Tracks look better after it moved a bit. Tracks seem awfully wide.

In the as-built consist it's listed as having a "Frame Arrgt - Long undercarriage". Track shoes are listed as being 21.5"-wide triple grouser.

In my drawings i don’t see this part of the cylinder. Putting on brand new seal kits on it and have no idea how to get this piece off as it’s not displayed on the drawings. Any help is much appreciated.

Which cylinder is that, boom, stick, or bucket.? By any chance is there a metal tag on the outside of the cylinder (close to the head end) with any Part Numbers.? From memory I think that type of stop is retained only by an internal O-Ring so that if you put a pry bar in between the piston retaining nut and the stop it should lever off. Also take care when removing the piston nut. 1. It looks as though it has been staked with a centre punch. You'll need to do something about that before attempting to remove the nut. 2. If you don'plan on re-using the nut then mark its position before you remove it and simply tighten it back to the same place. A few drops of Loctite wouldn't hurt either.

That particular one is the stick cylinder. I can’t read the numbers on the cylinder but the seal kit for it is 245-9835. That parts diagram in the SIS2GO caterpillar app doesn’t show that smooth collar on the end behind the big nut. My assumption is that the collar is pressed on but i don’t think there is enough gap for a 3 finger puller to even get in there.

It's actually a shrink fit stop used an an interim fix on an older generation of cylinders to replace a stop that was held in place with a snap ring. I'm assuming that this design suffered from snap ring failures. See below. Then the shrink-fit stop design was in turn replaced by the bolted-on stop shown in SIS under your Serial Number (2nd illustration). There is also the possibility that the cylinder on your machine is not an original and may have come from another machine. I found a Service Mag regarding the change. Note the comment that states the only way to remove the stop after the procedure is to cut it off.
