so i bought this machine at auction recently. 2014 257d. runs great, but after 4-5 minutes of running the orange warning light comes on along with a red oil or coolant light and beep warning. not really sure which this light is for. machine still runs great. i checked oil pressure with mechanical gauge, and it’s good. any ideas on this what else this light could be for? SIS says it could be for air filter restriction, might check that. Could also be for water in fuel sensor. Explanation is pretty vague.
Seems as though that indicator lights up AMBER for air cleaner restriction but RED for low oil pressure or high coolant temp. Maybe shoot the thermostat housing temperature when the alarm is on to confirm what temp you actually have.? Do you have an Operation & Maintenance Manual in the pocket behind the operator seat.? If you you really need one pronto. A Serial Number would identify the appropriate manual. They cost about $50 to download from Cat.
thanks, i do have the manual, but couldn’t find the light. definitely red, i will check the coolant temp in the morning. any ideas on the fuel sensor, i believe the machine sat a lot in the last year or so. at least it only had 200hrs put on it in the last year, according to the date and hrs written on oil filter.
Genuine Cat manual.? If yes what's the reference number on the front cover.? Should be something like SEBUxxxx-xx. In respect of what exactly.?
it’s location. i could imagine some water build up due to it sitting and the sensor not liking that
To confirm the correct location a Serial Number would be a good idea. There are 8 different models of 257D.
serial CAT0257DPEZW02303
#6 at the bottom is the water-in-fuel sensor.
Back to your red warning light #12 above. According to the explanation it is either oil pressure or coolant temperature. You said that you had checked the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. Do you have anything to check coolant temp at the thermostat housing when the alarm is going off.? It also might be worth checking the condition of the radiator/oil cooler package because they are known for getting plugged with trash in between the modules that can severely limit air flow.
Does your machine have the Advanced Display panel (below) on the RH side or just the standard one.? TBH if you want to permanently get away from the need to use ET for everything apart from high-level diagnostics that panel might be a good investment. It can be installed as a retrofit (there is a kit for it) and I think I am right in saying that it is now plug-and-play although it was not that way originally.
thx, will check the fuel sensor, not sure that’s related to my light though. and sadly i do not have the display. cat really skimped on this one, nothing but a fuel gauge.. i called cat yesterday and talked to a tech. he thinks if it’s not the sensor, which i replaced, and not an actual pressure problem, which i checked, he’d suggest a problem with the wiring harness. seems like a generic “i’m not sure’ reply, and unlikely to me though
TBH without hooking the diagnostic software up to the machine everything is a shot in the dark, which is why I asked if you had the (optional) display panel. It wasn't Cat who skimped on your machine, it was configured as per the requirements of whoever originally bought it. I would strongly recommend you upgrade to that panel, whether now or in the future, that is unless you want to get someone with ET to the machine every time you have a problem. As per a couple of posts above I would suggest you get hold of an infra-red thermometer and shoot the temperature of the cooling system to discount that as a source of the warning light.
