Son just bought a 416B cat backhoe after using it for about an hour it seems to have a clunking sound along with a jumping action on the drive shaft going to the front rear end (4X4). Anyone got any experience with this or any ideas? My thoughts are that something is broke in the front differential. Only does it when traveling in 4 wheel drive. Does it in both directions. TIA all help appreciated.
Is it when you switch forward to reverse . The bushing that pivots the front may be worn . Possibly uv joints. Raise the front end up with the bucket and watch as someone works the forward then to reverse. Use the brakes to stop rotation. Basically when at idle put it in gear with the front wheels up and see what moves.
Thanks, will check in AM. The noise is when it is moving but will look for loose parts.
Found the problem After pulling all of the front end apart we found that the front wheel drive PTO had came partially apart and we had a clutch pack housing running under the transmission gears. We repacked the cluches and seals along with acouple of nuts and are back to rolling.
