Cat 430D Backhoe Throttle Issues

Patriots88 ยท 2008-10-24 21:46

Where I work we have about six cat 430D backhoes ranging from 2003-2005 and they all have the same throttle problems. After about six months of running the machine the hand throttle for the back of the machine wont rev as high as the foot pedal. When you push the foot pedal to the floor you get 2300 RPM, but when you put the hand throttle all the way up it will only get 1700-2000 RPM depending on the machine which really slows production with the back of the machine. According to Cat the pedal and hand throttle both should be revving at 2300 RPM. We adjusted the cable at the engine and at the pedal but still cant get it back to 2300. We called Cat tech and all they could say was to adjust it which we did. So if anyone else has had this problem and can help please respond.

ive seen this in two 420Ds ive ran, what ive done is press the pedal to the floor then set the hand throttle then spin the seat and it will be at 2300,BUT with both machines the foot throttle started sticking when you idle the hand throttle, would stick around 1000to1200. ended up putting new cables in both machines:beatsme

Patriots88 Even as a die hard Bills fan I can help (kinda) there are new throttle cables avalible that should take care of what your complait is they are 2350128 front and 2493286 rear if your 430 serial numbers are between BNK05900-07172 im sure thats what your problem is.there was also 420d and 416ds that had the same issue

There should be an adjustment on both ends of the cable to the hand throttle. It's a real pain to adjust, but if nothing is frozen or frayed on there it should take care of it. If it needs to be adjusted a lot, better check to see what's causing it, because cables shouldn't really stretch by much. Nothing worse than hearing it snap when you pull back on the lever. We just had to replace the hand throttle cable on our 420D. When using just the foot pedal, it returns back to idle, but after using the hand throttle it hangs up around 1200rpm. With everything apart, I noticed that the cable bunches up when you close the hand throttle, because the linkage doesn't return to its original position under the cab. It's what made our other cable break and would do the same to the new one, except that until it's fixed, we have to pull up on the foot pedal while closing the hand throttle to make it return to idle and keep from destroying a rather expensive cable. PAcattech, is there a known issue with the linkage between hand throttle and foot pedal needing to be cleaned/greased or a spring changed periodically or is this issue purely with the cables going bad? We assumed the rear cable was the only culprit, but after changing it, the problem is still there.

cat420 both cables should be replaced there have been changes made in front cable that improve the way both work give me you serial number and i'll let you now if yours needs both.

Heres a couple easy fixes I found for a 420D. The pedal would'nt return to low idle; Push out the hinge pin at bottom of pedal, wire brush, lube and re-install. The hand throttle needed the nut tightened, unbolt the panel, pull up the whole thing till you can get at it. The nut loosened causing the lever not to hold the cable at the highest RPM.

Bringing back a thread from the dead... Is it safe to say that my New Holland LB75B has a similar throttle pedal and hand throttle as the above? I'm having trouble with the foot pedal won't idle as low as it should unless I hand throttle it up to about the RPM the foot pedal leaves it at, then back the hand throttle back down... Like it just gets stuck.
