Cat 938F with 3116 engine with loud knock

Dons toys ยท 2015-02-25 23:42

Does anyone know of a replacement engine for a 3116 cat in a 938F loader? Ours has a very loud knock like a piston hitting the head. It has a lot of blow by as well.

Is there some reason you don't want to repair the engine that is in it ?

As we understand it, the 3116 is a dry sleeve, which would mean a fair amount of machine work. Our thought was, if there was a replacement engine that would fit we could maybe get a longer lasting engine and possibly cheaper to repair when the time comes. Only a question at this point. Are their some after market overhaul kits that are good but more reasonable than Cat?

You might just have a bad injector,

What's this machine being used for DT? Is the blow by visible right after you start it or does it have to be worked some before it becomes visible. Blow by can sometimes look excessive on a CAT and it can be hard to tell without measuring it. Also how does it start normally or is it a little hard to start.

The injectors are okay. We use the loader for loading dirt mostly. The blow by is constant. Cat measured the blow by at 853 cu.ft./min. (about twice normal) It starts very well unless it is extremely cold, then it needs a shot of ether.

There are a lot of 3116's for sale on eBay. There is even a remanufactured one with the injector pump on it for $8500.00. Used ones for $4000.00 and under.

The knocking could be just an injector synchronization problem but the high blowby is not good. These engines will wear out pretty quick if not timed and synchronized properly. You could go to a 3126 heui but the cost and longevity wouldn't gain you much. You're probably better to fix what you have.

That is WAY over spec for sure! I have seen numerous 16's with high blow by that end up having broken snap rings allowing the wrist pins to wear into the sleeve. As far as repairing what you have these engine's aren't "terribly" expensive to rebuild. They're pretty easy to tear apart and put back together. The worst part is the injector synchronization. If you know how to do it or can find a mechanic who has a good bit of experience with dialing them in they can be quite good engines.

Thanks for the help from each of you. It looks like we will pull the engine and see what has happened. Then decide whether to replace or overhaul. We are looking at the e-bay units as well. Also, I didn't know the timing was that critical; thanks for the heads up.

The thing about a used engine for a replacement is the the value you will have in the engine you would be taking out. Think about all those spare parts it would provide.
