I am needing the valve adjustment sequence and also the intake/exhaust valve clearances for a 1972 Cat 955L 85J series track loader. 20 run hours after purchasing the track loader, the motor dropped a valve. Had to replace a piston, some valves and have the head welded and reground.
Inlet 0.015 +/- 0.003" Exhaust 0.025 +/- 0.003" Firing Order is standard - 1-3-4-2. There is a complex sequence for adjusting the valves but frankly I just turn the engine over until the valves on one cylinder are rocking, this will be TDC on the exhaust stroke of that cylinder which is obviously TDC on the other cylinder whose piston rises and falls with it. Therefore on this engine if the valves are rocking on #1 you adjust the valves on #4, or if they are rocking on #2 you adjust the valves on #3, etc. That way you can set the valves on all cylinders in just 2 turns of the crankshaft.
