Cat 963C gauge cluster issues- oil pressure/temp?

deeredriver ยท 2024-12-11 10:32

Hi, I have a 2002 cat 963c that has no oil pressure or oil temp on the gauge cluster. The water temp and fuel gauge both work like they should. Any ideas where to start looking? Do cat dealers have a way to test my gauge cluster if I take it to them? Thanks

How about a Serial Number.? "2002 963C doesn't really cut it when it comes to looking up information.

Thanks. There are multiple electrical schematics for 963C depending on Serial Number. Check your message inbox. Question: When you turn on the key switch do all four gauges sweep full scale, all warning lights illuminate, master fault light light flashes, and the audible warning sounds.? What it may pay you to do is locate the oil pressure/temp senders on the machine and disconnect the wire that connects to the sensor. Then ground that wire to the nearest place onm the engine or transmission. If the relevant gauge pegs at max reading then the gauge is good but the sender is bad.

I just realized. There is no oil pressure reading on the quad gauge. From your desription that the fuel level and engine coolant (I hope it hasn't got just water in it) temperature both work OK then it would appear that the gauges for splitter box temperature (#2) and hydraulic oil temperature (#4) are the ones not working. Please can you confirm.

Gauges do sweep when I turn the key. I will try to find the sending unit. Thanks

2 and 4 are the ones not working. I just got this machine and thought the gauge was for engine oil? 1 and 3 work just fine. Thanks

That's good because it means there is nothing wrong with the gauges. The problem is either going to be either a sender/sensor or possibly a broken wire somewhere. See the attachment, which also contains Part Numbers. The single-wire sender for the splitter box (trans) temperature is #10, the 3-wire hydraulic oil temperature sensor is #22. The diagnostics will be different for each one. For the trans temp sender all you have to do is pull the single wire off the sender and touch the end of it to ground. if the gauge goes to max when you do that the sender is bad. If it does not there is probably a broken wire somewhere. You will have to use the electrical schematic and trace the 443-Yellow wire from the sender to the dash panel. For the sensor the diagostics are somewhat more complex, and start with a question. When you first turn on the key look in the RH side of the display window (#1). As part of the panel self-test you will see an icon "SERV CODE" light up. At the end of the self-test does that icon go out or stay lit.?

Then I strongly suggest you get hold of an Operation & Maintenance Manual ASAP. These hydrostatic-drive tractors have some pretty stringent mainteance requirements, especially regarding the oils. You can download a pdf copy from Cat for $52 or get the same thing on a CD from HERE for $43 + shipping. If you fancy a paper copy see HERE .

Several of the Older 963B units where I work gauges do NOT function, the 'Techs' have made attempts to fix and gave up as costs escalated, manual gauges and the alarm switches showed all good as the alarm sensors were tried by a Cat Rep and did work. Not a warm fuzzy but should the engines or hydro systems fail the company was forewarned.

Hopefully for an owner-operator the solution might involve more in the way of diagnostic time than parts. We've already established that the quad gauge appears to be fine, so logically it can only be a sender/sensor problem or wiring.

I think that the quad gauge gets its signals through the EMS module, so the communication wiring or the module/software could also be giving some problems.
