Cat d4h 3304

joecliffe9304 · 2023-12-30 10:55

Hi everyone, got a d4h series 3 with a 3304 engine burning good amount of oil daily, any other people had similar issues? Isnt low compression starts up good, imagine itll be rings/ pistons or head related? Thanks joe

Well, oil consuption is usually related to worn engine... unless something else is playing tricks. 1-check blow by 2-check compression 3-check valve stem seals. Also there might be a crack in head alowing oil out exaust, otherwise it might be visible. Got a 3304 in a d5 no such problems

  2. #2heymccall2023-12-30 13:24

3204 in my 8PB D4H ii had consumption issues, along with major soot in oil...cylinder head valve guide area worn. Didn't have bronze guides. Now it does. Oil got so sooted up that oil pump pickup screen got severely restricted. On ours, removed oil fill cap and revved engine, exhaust came out fill hole.

  3. #3joecliffe93042023-12-30 13:26

Yeah if its running oil cap off , oil will go everywhere, but it starts striaght away no struggle!,compression seems good, yeah if its running or start up out the exhaust seems like a load of black flakes , if that makes sense?

  4. #4joecliffe93042023-12-30 13:27

Hopefully be something as simple as yours! Did expect the head as it starts up no struggle no lose of a power etc

  5. #5.RC.2023-12-30 17:06

What is a "good amount of oil daily"?

  6. #6joecliffe93042023-12-30 17:41

I recon on a 12/13hour day, itll use from 4 to 6 liters no lose of power, white smoke, starts up great, runs fine, just burning oil

  7. #7Dave Neubert2023-12-30 18:49

If you are blowing oil out of filler wile running it is time for a rebuild

  8. #8.RC.2023-12-30 19:04

    Turbo seals?

  10. #10Mquinista2023-12-31 04:09

There u have your problem... Old engines like this vent to atmosphere, but before the crank case pressure vent to atmosphere it goes through a oil/air separator. u check that out too. A clogging in the crakcase vent system can cause oil consuption, this case oil enters combustion chamber by rings and by the valve guides, 3/4 liters in 10h is a lot, for such a small engine.(90HP) Usually is no need to check compression, if crankcase vent is not visible or not too bad. But a compression test and a leak test, shall give u more acurate answers. Good luck

  11. #11joecliffe93042023-12-31 04:14

So the pipe that vents it to air, isnt bad if you put your hand on it, ca barely feel it, the bloke possibly doing the rebuild thinks dirt/ dust has gotten in somewhere through the air filter, know where the oil are seperater would be?

  12. #12Mquinista2023-12-31 04:36

Yep, that is , in the head cover u have a pipe coming out to vent. Oil in those engines only comes out the dip stick pipe if crankcase pressure is very high. That is what will cause a lot of oil consuption in most cases.

  13. #13joecliffe93042023-12-31 04:40

Yeah nothing out of the dipstick!, imagine it needs some internal work aswell so good to get the knowledge about the other bits, we were going to take the heas off and inspect, sumps on, nothing suspecious looking in it, which is a good thing!

  14. #14Mquinista2023-12-31 07:02

3300 series engines are know to last 30k hours, this 3304 baby 4 cylinder has some variants 90HP, 120HP, 150 HP. The 120HP and 150HP are 7 liter, and the 150 has cooled intake and most are Automotive style. Assuming yours is also 7 liter and assembled with same parts, it shoud outlast the tractor. Nevertheless that does not mean the engine hasn´t wore out prematurly. If happen to be the case, inspecting the compression and leak test it my give u a clue on how the cylinders/rings condition, and the valve sealing capacity. with that info u can take decisions... This cause oil consuption is a very bad indication. Good luck with your findings

  15. #15joecliffe93042023-12-31 08:59

Yeah!, we think its the 120hp, still started perfect ran fine no lose of power, orginally the turbo was on its way out so swapped that over to a new one, ran it all up etc but was still using oil, imagine its ringa related but hey ho! , can these be rebuild in the machine without taking out?

  16. #16Mquinista2023-12-31 09:24

In a D4 is not a 120HP 3304, belive me, or it is a derated version of the 7liter or is a smaller bore thing. or its been swapped... If u´re lucky and the deck does not need re surfacing the cylinders are of the float sleeve type, basically u throw a new set of sleeves in , new rings on the old pistons and its quite a cheap fix. Of course new head gasket, valves checked and so on, the cheap fix is a matter of speak. Other members will say to rebuild engine with CAT originals....

  17. #17joecliffe93042023-12-31 09:30

Must be a 90! Not swapped, the cat wizard over here says its a 3304 di which with all the vin etc is correct, does the engine have to come out for that? Or can it be done in the dozer still? Hoping rings sleeves pistons and we will be away, great little dozer

  18. #18Nige2023-12-31 11:35

You wanna post a Serial Number so that people can look up technical information.? I imagine it's 9GJ-something. If you are planning on jumping in swinging spanners do you have a Service Manual.? Because if you don't you really need one PDQ. A Parts Manual wouldn't hurt either.

  19. #19joecliffe93042023-12-31 12:17

9GJ00639 , 3304 di is what he told me, no service manual , all im doing it currently stripping the bits to make it abit quicker for him im happy to swing spanners!

  20. #20joecliffe93042023-12-31 12:18

    Tidy old thing it is

  21. #21Nige2023-12-31 13:49

Without the benefit of a Service Manual might I ask where you plan on finding all the specifications, procedures, & all the other information necessary to put it back together.?

  22. #22joecliffe93042023-12-31 13:56
  23. #23joecliffe93042023-12-31 13:56

Fitter is doing the work! Ive just swung a spanner on the simple stuff!

  24. #24Nige2023-12-31 14:09

Has he got the info or is he just winging it.?

  25. #25joecliffe93042023-12-31 14:13

If your uk based youll of heard of tony coates, hes the man doing it! What he doesnt know about cats isnt worth kmowing

  26. #26Nige2023-12-31 14:19

Ah, you mean "Doc" Tony. You are in good hands. Tell him I said hello..........

  27. #27joecliffe93042023-12-31 14:23

That i shall! Just being stripping most the stuff of ready for him, so he isnt wasting his time! Leaving anything thats timed upto him haha

  28. #28tctractors2023-12-31 15:31

The D4H LGP's are set around 105 bhp, the D5H Tractors are 120 bhp motors, it's not common to see in the U.K. a Jap built D4H with the 3304 DI engine fitted, I popped up to see this D4 and found the air filters had no adapter flange in place in the filter case, this is the bolt in plate the radial seal filters push into, the Turbo was looking stressed probably from all the dust it has swallowed from the dusty season we have had in the months before, so it's head off, sump off and liners out time, the head will probably need a big tweak up but all simple stuff, the Tractor is in tidy shape for the U.K. and works strong.

  29. #29joecliffe93042023-12-31 15:36

The man himself! Still on the hunt for the adaptor if not, will get a plate made up for it!

  30. #30Dave Neubert2023-12-31 18:28

I think you can drop the belly pan and see if you have room to drop the oil pan

  31. #31Mquinista2024-01-01 11:48

So just a derrated 3304? Not a fancy thing with small bores, or less stroke?

  32. #32joecliffe93042024-01-01 12:30

Have to see what the doc says when i see if the pump can be tweeked a little haha

  33. #33Nige2024-01-01 12:51

I think I know what TC will say even before you even ask him. "If you want more HP buy a bigger tractor"......

  34. #34joecliffe93042024-01-01 13:25

Im Only kidding, rather it be reliable!, got a d6r xl a local lads wanting to sell once he retires, shes just the perfect size for most my work!, pushes well for its age and size! More than happy with it

  35. #35joecliffe93042024-01-01 13:27

Im Only kidding, rather it be reliable!, got a d6r xl a local lads wanting to sell once he retires, shes just the perfect size for most my work!, pushes well for its agr Shes tidy, fitted a air seat in it, happily sit in it 12hours a day haha

  36. #36tctractors2024-01-01 15:23

The 330C and the 3304 run the same 4 3/4" bore X 6" stroke, the power change on all this size engine is not through the cylinder capacity but other components, this is the same if it is P.C. or D.I. type, spacer plate or counter bore block all the same basic bore and stroke.

  37. #37tctractors2024-01-01 15:31

Nige, we don't even have to think about this point, all we have to do is make sure the engine is running to the correct spec' it was built for, that is the correct low and high idle also the stall rpm and that is all you need. p.s. Happy New Year Nige.

  38. #38Nige2024-01-01 15:35

I could not agree more. I knew exactly what you were going to say........

  39. #39tctractors2024-01-01 15:37

A D6R Xl is not a common banger in the U.K. LGP is what near everyone peddles about in on our Rock, I know there is a few around but WHY??? it's rained near every day for the last month, an LGP Tractor is struggling to move and will do for months to come.

  40. #40joecliffe93042024-01-01 15:38

Its in the best hands, look forward get it back out, shes got alot of forestry work in for the year! For the work shes got enough power, like you said any more be time to go bigger

  41. #41joecliffe93042024-01-01 15:41

Your gazebo is going up this week with the weather! Haha sorry its no workshop!

  42. #42grandpa2024-01-01 18:50

I just sold my D4H LGP series 3 (105hp) and ordered a new D3 next gen (104hp). I hope I don't miss that one horse.

  43. #43joecliffe93042024-01-01 18:59

I had a new d4 on a job with my old d4, the new one was terrible gutless thing, old d4 pushed rings around it

  44. #44Welder Dave2024-01-03 02:45

Your D4H looks like it's been well cared for and not all beat up. I would think it would out work a low track D4 but don't know if it weighs more or not.

  45. #45joecliffe93042024-01-03 03:29

Shes tidy! And still got all the panels!

  46. #46John Shipp2024-01-03 21:33

I need your clothes, your boots, and your D4H series 3. Well looked after machine, by the looks of it Joe C (thumbs up)

  47. #47joecliffe93042024-01-04 02:10

Haha size 12 and dirty jeans? Shes tidy , fitted with a cat air seat in it aswell!, so it stays nice and comfy in the cab! Ill find you another picture! Hopefully with a few attachments been made we will be back in the forestry stuff in no time

  48. #48joecliffe93042024-01-11 16:01

Well months ago the 'doc' was right, soon as we first met he said, little bit of head work, rings liners pistons, and this week he was bang on the money

  49. #49joecliffe93042024-02-20 15:51

The doc has had his filthy mittens all over it, soon be time for the maiden voyage

  50. #50nicky 68a2024-02-25 03:10

Good morning Joe. If you are hell bent on a D6R XL,come and have a look at the one up in Skelm. It was a trade in but I knew its previous owner. I’ve no idea how much he wants for it,but it looks a deceant tractor for an end user the likes of yourself or me and would be priced accordingly

  51. #51joecliffe93042024-02-25 03:24

Morning nick! Nothing for a while d4 needs to earn some money! Running fingers crossed this week, then striaght upto whitby to build some forestry roads!

  52. #52nicky 68a2024-02-25 03:26

I know what you mean. Good luck with getting it mobile this week

  53. #53joecliffe93042024-02-25 03:33

Look forward have it done, few motorcross tracks booked in, then around the country for the timber haulage roads

  54. #54.RC.2024-02-25 17:26

Does the UK still have a forestry/sawmilling industry?

  55. #55joecliffe93042024-02-25 21:45

Yes it does, forestry is still big, big sawmills are getting a few far between now these days

  56. #56nicky 68a2024-03-01 01:27

Yes.I own a timber merchants and most of our material is home grown with imports from Sweden and abit from Eastern Europe. Softwoods.

  57. #57John Shipp2024-03-01 01:51

How's timber sales recently? The mills we sell logs to in SE have been in the doldrums for ages.

  58. #58joecliffe93042024-03-01 02:33

  64. #64nicky 68a2024-03-02 00:41

Not bad.We have been in unofficial recession here in UK since Oct 22,but definitely turned a corner the last couple of months in my sector. The rest of the construction industry will still suffer though this year.

  65. #65nicky 68a2024-03-02 00:43

Thanks Joe,but that will never happen.I did go down that route years ago,but these days we simply don’t get involved.
