Started having trouble with my D5N today. It will not shift into 1st. Shifts and moves forward and reverse in 2nd and 3rd. Dash display shows shift to 1st gear but machine remains in 2nd (forward and reverse). Any ideas where to start? Thanks in advance.
Hello and welcome to HEF. First of all, in order to get accurate information on your machine a serial number will be required. Is there any active error codes? If not i would pull the floor and inspect the shaft in gear. If its turning in gear with no movement of machine then i would be pulling the filters and magnets and inspecting for debris and clutch packs.
Apart from what @Cliffy mentioned above, have you looked closely at the transmission oil yet.? Is it dark & cloudy or clear & bright in appearance.? Does it smell burned.? When was the last time the oil & filter were changed.? It may pay you to drop the oil and remove the transmission magnetic suction screen for a look. Losing one speed in the transmission both F & R could possibly be an indication of a clutch failure. If this is the case the evidence will be in the screen. See attached.
The machine remains in 2nd, when shifted to 1st (and drives F and R). Dash indicates 1st but machine remains in 2nd. Shifts 2nd and 3rd fine as well. AGG014422. The transmission oil is crystal clear and does not smell burned. Oil and filter have 200 hrs on them. I wondered what tells the transmission to shift to 1st electronically. Is there a solenoid or ? that makes the shift?
OK, time to start looking at Diagnostic Codes. Strictly speaking you need a Click Box, aka 4C-8195 Service Tool. However in a situation like this one you can McGiver a solution using no more than 2 short pieces of automotive cable. Click this LINK for a thread dedicated to the Click Box. I suggest you read through all of it but pay particular attention to Posts #50-52 on Page 3. Any questions please ask. You're also going to need an electrical schematic. The Serial Number you gave above has 1 digit too many (has 6, should have only 5) after the AGG-prefix. Can you confirm the S/N please.
I fat fingered it, AGG01442. Going to pick up the machine and bring back tomorrow. I will check the link you provided. Thank you for the help!!
I'll send you the schematic. Keep an eye on your messages.
Yes there are solenoids controlling clutch pressures. If the the dash indicates it’s going to first gear but it stays in second you should start by pressure testing each clutch pack. There may be 5 pressure test ports on the back of the trans case.
