Cat D8K sold high

zhkent · 2007-09-19 20:45

I looked at a D8K that had cab and air and was in good shape the day before the Ritchie Bros Sept. Auction in Kansas City. I really like my D9G. But a cab would be nice. the 8 would be easier to move, and I mistakenly thought it might go cheap. The tractor had a nice interior, looked good on the outside, good undercarriage and had $60,000 worth of work done on motor and trans in the last year. Should of stayed home auction day. It sold for $220,000.

they usually bring 40-50,000 around here at auction in avg shape. For 220,000 it would have to have a cat certified rebuild for me to be interested. We run two 8k's and I am looking for a third, for that kind of money I could buy a good 8R

  2. #272V2007-09-19 21:10

Sounds like a bidding frenzy went out of control. I can't imagine even a really nice K going for half that much here.

  3. #3zhkent2007-09-19 21:31

I think the exchange rate may have had something to do with it. Think it went to the UK. That is still dang high. I was going to go 40k on it and figured I wouldn't get it bought, but didn't want to miss it if it did go for that. As far as I know things aren't higher here in general.

I was checking their website out and what was coming up at their auction and saw the D8K you are talking about. It was cleaned and painted and undercarriage looked very good, but had no idea that it would even come close to selling for that. The way it looked i thought it would sell good, because of its condition, but not that good.I figured maybe in the high 60's range. What did the D6R's bring and some of the other equipment ? Did the other machines sell good also?:usa

The other equipment seemed reasonable. One contractor had brought in 50 or so pieces and they were all very well kept. A rops canopy D8N sold right ahead of the 8K and it went for 80,000, which seemed about right. There was another D8K there that was a scraper pusher. No blade or hydraulics and it went for 100,000. Other than the two D8K's things sold a bit high, but a lot of the equipment was in above average condition.

I hope the people in marketing at Caterpillar, where there to witness people willing to grab up almost 30 year old tractors for such high prices. So why would someone spend that kinda dough on an old D8K when they could buy a fairly newer D8R? Maybe Bill or Paul are collecting old Cats now.

  11. #11Ford LT-90002007-09-23 03:03

One of the local contractors had a D8K at RB auction 3 months ago the machine sold dirt cheap. It sold far cheaper than the owner was asking for it as a private sale. The old Cat was in fairly good shape they just didn't use it anymore. I think the machine was a 1969 but as I said it was in decent shape it sat for a few years.

  12. #12Neil D2007-09-23 18:23

I would not have thought it was sold to the uk for that sort of money, over here a good price for a D8K would possibly be $70000. Neil

  13. #13Neil D2007-10-09 17:29

Erops Hi ZHKent just to add that if you want an erops for your 9G, Kenco do one for $6405 plus taxes-a lot cheaper than buying another tractor! Neil

a friend of the family who we bided a lot of jobs together with had 2 D8K's w/cab & air to push 4)TS14 Terex pans with When they updated the "PUSH" Cats to D9R's & other equipment a few years ago they had an auction The 2 D8K's sold for $45k & $55k & that was w/ new undercarriage on both machines & new cutting edges on blades $220k sounds like what someone else said ya could buy a CAT certified rebuild machine @ that cost sounds like 2 bidders wanted that machine BAD Later yall Bulldog

Last Ritchie bros auction here a 98 hitachi ex750-5 with 5000hrs, new paint, and trust me this machine was a nice one , went for $70,000 cdn! What a deal, but on the contrary a 2006 d9t with 600 hrs i believe in Quebec went for $500k. That was an expensive d8k.

The Blue Boy. Around 1995/6 I attended an Auction (Don Fords, Stafford) with the orders to buy the " BLUE BOY " the last D8K sold, the first jobs to do on it was sort the heads and remove the engine to fix the usual knackerd engine mount (the one by the H/pump) we took the bidding upto £46,000 (I was told to buy it " WHAT EVER ") but my heart was pumping like an Elephants as I new it was way over the top cash-wise and it was sold????? for £46,500 to Biffa Waste, we bought the last D8K in the sale for a cracking price of £21,200 which I did a full rebuild to it, (most TAX efficient) I would love to know who paid this top price for a near 30 year old banger, if it was bought for the U.K. I can only think of 2 people that would have this sort of steam behind them to pay out big style tctractors

new to forum Hi all, Stumbled on the forum after many internet searches on an unrelated topic. Had to register after reading the thread on the D8 K that sold high. I worked for the company here in Omaha, Ne that sold the D8 K at K.C. I was the hoe operator and heavy hauler for them for the last 3 yrs. The machine was purchased in 2005 from a small grading company in Iowa. It was totally trashed. It had obviously worked in the aggregate quarries for a period of time and had a crude set of tree sweeps fabricated as it must of done some tree clearing. It was used sparingly in '05 and the spring of '06 when it was time for a complete rebuild. The entire machine was disassembeld and rebuilt. The only thing on the track assemblies that were reused were the grousers, everything else was replaced or rebuilt. The hard nose, pans and hoods were replaced with salvaged items of remans. The factory cab was gutted and instead of redoing the factory a/c and new Red Dot unit was installed. Everything else was replaced or reconditioned. NMC completely went through the rearend and also provided the rebuilt transmission and engine. All assembly was handled by our one heavy equipment mechanic and one helper. I don't know the exact amount, but I had heard that well over $100,000 was spent on the rebuild not including the original purchase price. When the company decided to sell all of their grading equipment I hauled everything to K.C. The Ritchie Bros. reps. were impressed with the equipment, but never thought that it would go out of the ballpark. I took a new position with another company 2 days before the auction. When I talked to the owner a couple of weeks later about how the auction went he told me how well the 2 D8's did. (They also owned the pushcat.) Nobody imagined they would do that well. There were some companies in town who were interested, knowing who had done the work, but none interested at those prices. Anyway, just wanted to let you know some of the background. Be happy to answer any questions if I can

Welcome to the HEF, Nelowboy1. Always glad to know there is another Nebraskan on board, and a fellow Omahan to boot. I worked for Sanford And Sons, er, Negus and Sons, since 1992, up until last year. What contractor had these D8's? It is still unknown if my old outfit is going to survive in any way, shape or form. Lots of rumors going around, all I know is the yard is full of iron and company pickups with the license plates removed.... Nice to hear somebody is still working around here, a lot of us aren't! Again, welcome to the HEF. Alan627b

New cat d7e The first cat D7E made its way to my state the other day, and I was lucky enough to get about an hour on it. I am one of very few people around here to have been on one, which surprises me because I dont usually get to try the latest machines out until they have been around long enough to get worn out. I will say that it was different, but I wonder how well they will hold up over time. The undercarriage seems to be stout, wow! The grousers almost look too big to be on a 7, but for a new machine the tracks were very loud. The new cab design is nice, visibility is good, and it still feels like quality, it doesnt feel like a cheap plastic bubble like some of their other cabs. They put the seat in straight again, not at an angle like a lot of us are now used to, but it seems to work OK. The engine compartment has two angled panels that face the cab and reflect the sun right into your eyes. They should have painted those non reflective black, I was also not impressed with the control lever designs. They dont allow you to hold a lever like you would naturally, and I was not crazy about the directional switch, and it takes some getting used to running a dozer that has no decelerator. It had a lot of power, going in a straight line, plenty enough power to spin the tracks on a heavy push which surprised me. It was better than I expected for something that runs on electricity. Like I said before, I would like to see how it will hold up, I would like to run one that has a few thousand hours on it. I also think that they can make some improvements to it,mostly with the controls, maybe the next version of this machine will be better. I was wondering about weather or not there are any long term health risks from being near all of the electric components? Overall, I give it a 7 out of 10. Do any of you run one of these regularly? if so I would like to hear what you think so far.

2007...oops! Musta been M&S.. nobody else with that nice of equipment has sold anything and gone under here in the last few years! If things don't improve soon though, they might not be the last! Alan

Just goes to show you can't believe everything an auctioneer says.. Denny.. to find out what D6R's are really worth-look at this: YouTube - 1998 Cat D6R Dozer: March 17th Auction in NE Missouri

Looks like the vendor was the winner in the D8K sale! I only wish that equipment was priced as good here in Australia as it is in the States. For example, the following prices came from a local website www.constructionhub.com.au D4D $30 - $40k D4E $50 - $60k D6C $30 - $50k D6D $60 - $90k D7G $80 - $100k D8K $100 - $140k Even D4 7Us with a blade fitted are going for about $15,000 in good condition. These are $Au prices and at present our dollar is about $0.92US so there is still a big difference in prices. I gusee it gets down to availability and demand. John

Hi Aussie John Thanks for posting that. Is always interesting to know machinery prices on the other side of our ditch. Machinery prices are pretty cheap here, was a auction in auckland recently where a real tidy 140hp D6C sold for 37k. Went to pacific islands and a tidy 1982 ps D4E sold for 25k. These are our dollars which is a hell of alot less AUD. 1 kiwi peso gets .76 Au $ So is some good buys here at present but shipping may be another question. Although i did hear of someone in SA shipping a Allis HD6EP over from here. Cheers Merv :drinkup

I seen a pair from S.A. in MD Sale go in to office and say they were not bidding in US$ and try to renegotiate. Ritchie put back in sale later and it went much lower. They get beat when they return home

Has anyone ever heard of a problem with CAT D8k's sucking an intake valve? I have a friend who has sucked down two intake valves in 800 hours. This last time he put on brand new CAT heads with all new CAT parts. The mechanic told him that D8k's were good for that? I have an 8K and I haven't had much trouble with it at all. Does anyone know about this?

D8k Hi, Iron Planet has a listing for an ex-navy D8K with ripper, just over 2000 hrs. It looks in real good shape-be interesting to see what it brings. Dominion:canada

  38. #38Mccahilldozing2010-09-17 21:52

I looked at that D8k and it looks pretty clean for what it its. I have seen a few military tractors and that one doesnt look like a military version. First I dont see any green paint. I realize that it has been painted over but in the scratches you should be able to see a little green paint. All those Navy tractors were painted green. I have a friend who bought three of them and all the parts are green. Most of them were close to the ocean and have a lot of corosion on the belly pans. Second the hour meter is not the original. Its been replaced and there is no way to tell the actual hours. That ripper that they are including is probably off of a D8h. Most of the D8ks had a four barrel ripper. I have seen a few with the two barrel rippers but they are few and far in between out here. If it were going through auction in California it would be lucky to bring over 30k
