So anyone that has seen me stick my nose into various posts, and offer my 5 cents (Canada got rid of the penny) probably have figured out that I am a big fan of Volvo. My experience with Cat is pretty much limited to their tractors, excavators, or loaders. I ran a 1972 Cat 14E plowing snow for 5 winters, but that is pretty much the extent of my Cat grader experience. My question is..... what is the difference between a 120 and a 12, a 140, and a 14 and so on.
The 14M for example have more horse power, more weight, longer moldboard than the 140M.
There must be more to it than that. The 14 has more hp and weight than the 160. Why have a 100 series, and a 10 series. Why not just a 160 then a 180, 190, etc
Search posts by Randy Kreig. He is the resident Cat grader expert. This topic has been discussed before on here.
I've heard the 100 series was just a way to make the model sizes more comparable to the competition at the time and has basically just stuck. A 12, 120 and 140 I believe are all the same frame with different horsepowers. The blade lengths can be anything. I've seen 12' blades on 120 and 140 machines and 14' blades on 12s. A 14 grader is a lot bigger frame and plenty more horsepower. I've seen most with 14' blades made out of a lot thicker steel and some with 16' blades or 14' with a two foot extension. The tire sizes are a quick indication of the horsepower differences between each model of machine. The smaller units seem to be snow machines, finish graders on light construction or governmental agency road maintenance units. The model 14 and larger show up in heavy construction and mining.
I have searched here and find two older topics about this: HeavyEquipmentForums And the most informations you find here:
Just go to the CAT web site and it's all there, easier then trying to explain it all.
A 12 and 140 are same size the 140 more hp and 14' blades. Same with 14 and 160 except 16' blades. And a 3 at the end means all wheel drive on older models. After seeing a post in one of the other threads my info doesn't match but that's how I always understood it.

Early model 120& 130 G had the 3304 T for an engine, the 12 had the 3306.
I hope you just copied and pasted that Oxbow, cause if you typed it all out, I feel like I should give you some money or something. So besides the specs, it is an example of how deep Cat's pockets are. Instead of restructuring their production line, they just introduced an entire new line in order to compete in sales. It was interesting to read the old threads, as they always lead to other topics, like cab designs, and moldboard length. I had forgot about my old 14E having a 13 foot moldboard. My 730 Champion had a 14 foot moldboard. It was a bit too much blade for the machine, but it did handle it fairly well.
To summarize, 120, 140,160 machines are all Maintenance machines, 12, 14, 16 size machines are Constructions machines I believe a 12 is equivalent to a 140 and a 14 would be equal to a 160 Besides horse power I really don't know if theres anything different between a maintenance machine and a construction machine?
Just to confuse things further, there was also a 130 between the 120 and 12, but I believe it was dropped when the M series were introduced. Cheers, Greg oops... somehow missed RDG's post above
A 160 uses the same frame as a 140 and not a 14. Check the tire sizes and you will see.
From reading the Cat site, and these forums, I thought it went... 120 130 12 140 160 14 16 Someone here posted, that the 120s and 140s were designed for townships, that didn't want to spend the money on 12s and 14s.
Yes cutting edge, I just copied from the Cat Performance Handbook that I have on the computer. Unfortunately it didn't separate the models like they are in the handbook, but the info is there!
