are those down there right now? they are pretty good sized trucks, what are they using to load them?

  2. #2hitch2008-11-28 04:29

Are they specially customized or CAT made them? The model is off highway trucks but I never saw this kind of machine before.

  3. #3992G2008-11-29 07:47

The are parked right now. The exact location is the NW corner of the 215 and Aliante Parkway, north side of town. It looks like they were loading them with an Hitachi EX1100 and possibly some larger wheel loaders.

  4. #4992G2008-11-29 07:51

From what I was told, the trucks all started out as standard trucks with the dump beds. The dealer made the conversion to the bottom dump trailers. All of them can still be converted back to a standard dump bed at any time.

A few years ago Las Vegas Paving had those wagons on a project in central Nevada where I saw them being loaded by a 710 Holland Loader; it was an impressive operation. I know that LVP owning those wagons has really helped them corner the market on long haul dirt jobs in southern Nevada. They always struggled against American Asphalt on many dirt jobs, unless it was long haul dirt, where those wagons gave them the edge.

  6. #6JTL2008-12-03 12:25

Some pics are our old 772 belly dumps.

  7. #7JTL2008-12-03 12:35

I quess I cant figure out out to post pictures. This is a pain in the butt!!!

  8. #8992G2008-12-03 20:29

Keep trying, you will get it.

  9. #9JTL2008-12-04 14:19

    One more try!

  10. #1090plow2008-12-05 21:47

how do the bottom dumps work? seems like it would put the pile right in the path of the tires unless they pull onto some kind of dumping station or something...

  11. #11Tanstaafl2008-12-06 17:45

The on road bottom dumps I've seen in action all dumped on the move. Gotta have a big enough site to keep them moving but they worked pretty well.

  12. #12JTL2008-12-11 05:52

They dump in a windrow in between the wagon tires. If you notice the wheels on the wagon are quite a bit wider than the tractors rear wheels.

  13. #13scrub bull2008-12-18 07:05

how much increase in carrying capacity does it give have the trailer

  14. #14JDOFMEMI2008-12-18 10:57

Belly dumps usually add about double the regular dump box capacity. Trailers for 35 ton trucks are usually 70 ton, 50 ton trucks run around 100 ton. 85 ton trucks have been seen with 120 to 150 ton, and 150 ton trucks get a 240 ton trailer. These are not quite double, but still a good increase, then if the conditions are right, and not much grade to overcome, they can pull doubles. Some of the huge dirt jobs were done that way. Denver airport for one ran a fleet of 777 pulling 150 ton lead and 120 ton rear belly dumps. Same story at a large reservoir project in California. Wish I had some pics of that to share.

  15. #15ts-24 frank2009-09-12 14:14

jtl; i am still trying to figure out how to put pictures on hear, every time i try nothing. i am so glad you guys are sharing these pictures, the bigger equip the better. i have a bunch to share when ever i figure this out. talking about denver, we fluw in to denver and rented a suv to drive north and it was in a snow storm but passed a CAT dealor on the left side going up and they hat a slew of scrapers on the front fence line and did not have a camera avaible and i was driving, tried to catch it on the way back but it was pitch black, wish i had that chance again. ts-24 frank

  16. #16willie592009-09-12 15:17

Hello ts-24 frank, what method of attaching pics are you using?

  17. #17dozerdave2009-09-12 19:54

Hi Guys, I have worked on several major dam projects and most contractors used belly dumps as well as end spills and scrapers. Euc, Cat and Dart were the most common tractors to pull the belly dumps. Athey was the most common brand of trailers.

  18. #18miningtrucks2009-09-13 16:26

JTL could you post some photos of that payhauler in the picture next to the 772 and is there any other truck photos you have

  19. #19ts-24 frank2009-09-13 19:48

ATCOEQUIP; thank you for youre responce, but i am just learning, please bare with me on this. i have verizon and have emailed pictures before. i 1-put the pix onto my computer desk top then i hit BROWSE and it puts the pix i clicked in to my email. now i have tried to follow the instructions on equipment forum and have gotten no where. i am a bit frustrated but love reading all that everyone is writing, and the pix are great. for anyone; does anyone out there know where the THOMIS M. DURKIN CO. originally out of PHILLY, PA. IS WORKING TODAY. they used to have a few large pieces in there yard in philly on grant ave. they have since closed but i hear they are working out of the area. thanks for youre help. ts-24 frank

  20. #20diggerop2009-09-13 20:22

How about a 777 pulling 450 ton, the excavator is about 350-360 and the trailer 100 ton

  21. #21willie592009-09-13 20:29

That's Ok...we'll see if we can noodle through this. The easiest way to post pics is to have the pics saved on you PC, either in My Documents, My Pictures, or even Desktop, doesn't really matter, just a place that's easy to find them. Let's say your reading a thread, and want to make a post with pic. Click the blue Post Reply button on the left just below the last post on the thread, not the Post Quick Reply button. Now your looking at the "Reply to Thread" page. Look at the Icons on the toolbar and you'll see a white Smiley about the middle of the toolbar. Just to the right of the Smiley is an icon that looks like a paper clip, click on the paper clip. That will open the Manage Attachments window in a seperate window. Click on the top "Browse" button (this opens the "My Pictures" folder on my computer). Scroll through the pics and left double click on the pic you want. This will put the pic on the Browse bar back at the Manange Attachments window. You can go ahead click the other two Browse buttons and add two more pics if you like. Once you have the pics loaded on the Browse bars, click the Upload button to the right of the Browse buttons. After a moment, you'll see an icon appear to the left of the "Remove" button signifying the attachment has been downloaded. Click "Close this window". That takes you back to the Reply page. Click on the paper clip icon again. Click on the attachment in the drop down window. If you downloaded multiple attachments, click on "insert all". You will now see the attachments on the Reply page. You can go down to the bottom of the page and click the "Preview Post" button and see what your post will look like before you submit your post.

That is a whole different ballgame there. I was talking about a rule of thumb for production work. Heavy haul is completely different rules. Speeds are much slower, and care is taken with every load, or at least it should be. For material haulers, double the trucks normal capacity is the general rule with a trailer, but there are always exceptions. On long flat hauls, double trailers, each at near double the prime movers capacity as a truck is acceptable. Add some hills, and that option goes away quick. I do like the oversize lowboy though. Saves a lot of time and track wear. ATCO Good instructions. I hope Frank gets it figured out, it sounds like he has some good stuff to share.

  23. #23willie592009-09-13 20:48

Yeah man...we are kinda picture freaks around here.

  24. #24JDOFMEMI2009-09-13 20:57

While I am on this thread, I remembered I just downloaded some pics of a 769C pulling a 70 ton Challenge Cook Brothers belly dump, with sideboards it goes 80+ ton. Note that the fenders, mud guards, and rock kickers are not yet installed, as it just got hitched up in these pictures.

  27. #27B&S Grading2009-09-15 18:31

Belly Dumps Are Awesome...I Think You Can Get Them Standard From Cat Like That Now...

  28. #28Andy5122009-09-16 10:10

These are available from most Cat dealers also. 200 to 300 ton range. Primarily open pit coal mining. 45 mph top speed. Usually long hauls from pit to stockpile.

  29. #29cat345bl2009-09-16 15:06

Cool pictures frank, Looks like you took those pics in 2008 because now in 2009 morrissey has about 2-3 rows of their cement mixers blocking those ts-24 with the overhead rops on them. Durkin is still in business they just moved there yard to some where in bucks county I don't where, but that's what I've been told.

  30. #30rigandig2009-09-17 19:45

Those haul trucks are not manufactured by Cat. The engine and drive train are cat, but the rest is manufactured by Kress Mfg. They are located just a bit west of Peoria. A friend of mine has hauled each one that has been made for several years now, from the factory to the port or the mine sites here in N America. I think he told me a week or so ago that he was loading one this month. When they are moved from the factory they have no axles under them. I think I have a picture or two of one that he hauled to Savannah for export.

  31. #31ben46a2009-09-17 21:29

Is it just me or does it look top heavy on that float?

  32. #32ts-24 frank2009-09-17 21:52

hay cat345bl; nice shots you have i will try to put more on another day or so.i would love to find out where in bucks county DURKIN is at never see any of there trucks any where. wonder why all the secrecy with them they used to have some big dozers with rippers, funny never thought to take pictures before, what a huge mistake. thanks for youre info. ts-24 frank

  33. #33alco2009-09-17 23:14

I don't think he was trying to say that Cat makes them, just that they are available from some Cat dealers. Nice pictures by the way! Brian

  34. #34rigandig2009-09-18 06:49

Alco, I think you're right. I think that Cat does market them for Kress and also carries the warranty for the Cat furnished parts. Ben 46, Yes, it does look top heavy and probably is. Those trailers are for use at the ship yards only. Unloaded form road trailer, put on "MAFI" trailer, loaded on ship, off loaded at destination port, and they are transferred back onto a road trailer for the trip to destinantion.

  35. #35Andy5122009-09-21 12:25

    In-transit pics.

  36. #36rigandig2009-09-21 12:34

    Thanks for that post Andy.

  37. #37LuNaTIcFrEAk2009-10-01 13:29

Here is an interesting setup for you guys. Three bottom dump trailers full of salt pulled by and old Dart.

  38. #38WColtharp2009-10-01 14:28

Now that's a new one to me. I had salt was stripped/excavated this way. That's a cool setup there.

  39. #39ts-24 frank2009-10-18 15:26

cat 345bl; i ran down that info you gave me on the ts-24's. i contacted DURKIN by email and explained my reasions for wanting to take pix, being a member of the HISTORICAL CONSTRUCTION EQUIP ASSOCIATION and how these pieces are a part of our history and that i will be in the Mont Pocono area end of november and asked to be allowed to stop by and introduce myself for pix's, but no responce yet. i also tracked down MILLER paving and he actually returned my phone call, i was thrilled he said i could come to his new yard above Doylestown and take some pictures and how he is a member of the HCEA also and feels that the equip is worth saving in photos also. i am going to try and stop at Morrissey's snyderville sand pit and get pix of the ts-14's that week also. i stoped at the place you told me about by Oxfordvally Mall and found the scrapers there, it is CVA'S yard and one of the mechanics told me last yr they scraped the ts-24's but had an ts-18 and a 14 there but when i saw the yard boss in the trailer ( man with white hair and a mustach ) he told me after i just about begged and showed him pix i had he flat out told me no, i got in my truck and came back and asked to just shoot one shot of one sitting 14 i came a long ways for this, and he told me he would mind if i did. verry visitor unfriendly, and they were just sitting there. finally i stoped at Dinuccie on Oldrodgers rd and spoke to a women in the office who said she thinks they still have there ts-24's sitting somewhere and would have the owner call me back, but no responce. i am going to keep trying. to ATCOEQUIP thank you for the help with posting the pix's it did work i will pit more on later. thanks to both you guys for youre help, love this Forum. ts-24 frank

  40. #40willie592009-10-18 18:46

    Your welcome.

  41. #41cat345bl2009-10-26 16:25

I Never Knew People could be so mean Frank, but I just think their main focus is on work, that might be why they where mean. Wheres millers new yard at I never knew they moved. Morrissey still has the ts-14's sitting there, you may want to bring a weed whacker because they are most likely grown in. I contact you if I get any other scrapper information.

  42. #42ts-24 frank2009-10-26 19:34

cat345bl ; where did you say the ts-14s are again and are they axcessable to photo. miller told ne they moved north of DOYLESTOWN on easton rd--rt611, i am defenetly stopping by the couple of days i am up the mountains. also i have not given up on oxford vally yet, waiting for the leaves to fall and bringing a a-frame ladder hope to get pix from ajoining property have a good ZOOM cam, still excited and hopefull. missed my trade with that, was trained in army as an operator, but like alot of us at that time when it came time to work outside they laughed at me, i remember one of durkins people at his shop laughing at me and saying service experience would never get me in the seat of any machine hear, and i had no connections back then. the past is the past, planning on the future. thanks again for youre help. ts-24 frank

  43. #43BigIron252009-10-28 19:14

nice pics i never knew they had heavy haul trucks that had bottom dumps

  44. #44ts-24 frank2009-10-31 18:47

how to p/m someone cat345 bl; how would you do the p/m i just tried and it wouldent work it said i need to know who i am sending to, and i put mike durkin. thanks for youre help. ts-24 frank

  45. #45miningtrucks2009-10-31 23:45

luanticfreak do you have any photos of the cool machine that is loading that dart bottom dump with salt

  46. #46LuNaTIcFrEAk2009-11-04 18:58

    Why yes I do

  47. #47miningtrucks2009-11-04 19:07

luanticfreak what other machines were there besides the machine loading the dart bottom dump and the dart bottom dump and do you have any more photos of the triple dart bottom dump salt hauler

  48. #48miningtrucks2009-11-04 19:13

    sorry for the double post

  49. #49LuNaTIcFrEAk2009-11-05 11:51

Graders pile the long strips of salt that the harvester and haul trucks follow. I didn't see any other equipment. Because of all the salt, the equipment gets stripped to the frame and rebuild on a regular basis, one of the reasons the old darts have lasted so long.

  50. #50rbrduck712009-12-22 09:26

what ever that was its bilt on a scraper chassis very cool

  51. #51amtronic2009-12-22 16:51

(being greedy) Any more? No matter how bad - I'd like more detail on that thing.

  52. #52blondie2010-02-02 15:45

The coal-hauler bottom dumps usually pulled over a huge grated surface to dump through and then round de round all day long! Hopper under the grate, feeding a conveyor belt.

  53. #53blondie2010-02-02 15:55

Hello, I have a photo in jpeg format of a large spread of Cat belly-dumps doubles parked on the I-80 job just west of Salt lake city around 1980. I just joined this forum and don't know how to attach or display the photo yet.

  54. #54hydmech2010-02-02 17:13

    Those are cool picks.

  55. #55Aussieminer2010-02-14 22:19

Belly Dumpers I am after some information from anyonewho may have worked on the 789 bottom dump haulers used at the Black Mesa Mine. Can anyonr help me?

  56. #56alan627b2010-04-22 20:15

Does this count? Cat DW20 coal hauler.

  57. #57Aussieminer2010-04-22 21:06

Thanks alan627b, but not quite a Cat 789. Looking to build some Cat 789 belly dumpers/haulers. But would like to know how well the ones at Black Mesa Mine went. No one in Australia has built one for a 789 that I can find.

A lot of coal mines run belly dumpers for carting coal. Cat make tractor versions of the 777 and 785 with a king post attached to the rear truck frame. The 776s normally haul 150 ton while the 784s haul over 200 ton. Also, a lot of 776s are set up with 150,000 or approx 70,000 gal tanker trailers for watering roads. Also seen Euclids, Terex & Unit-Rigs set up the same. Have also seen photos of a Cat 789 set up with a belly dump trailer to haul 300 tons. John

Youtube videos of the salt mining in Mexico. Good shots of the DART haul trucks and salt harvester scraper/conveyor thing in action. YouTube - SALT MINES Guerrero Negro Baja California Mexico 09 Alfonso Jimenez and YouTube - Salinas Guerrero Negro - Baja California. Mexico .

  61. #61JDOFMEMI2010-06-11 23:05

    Great find there!

  62. #62lpnt652010-06-16 00:44

Cat Belly Dumps Euclid made same type of unit many years ago they were used on various sites especially Dam sites in Australia

  63. #63amtronic2011-06-05 16:56

Bringing back a year-old thread. I found some more pictures, and from the unit numbers they have at least three of these units! # 610 in the previous photos, and #609 and #611 here. Anyone know who did these conversions?

  64. #64LuNaTIcFrEAk2011-06-07 10:12

Its been a few years since I was there, but if I recall correctly they are an in-house custom design and build.

  65. #65rare ss2011-06-08 09:04

CAT made a prototype of this machine, looked quite good, its in the book "The Caterpillar Cronicals" it was basically a 639D with another 3306 mounted in the bowl driving an auger arrangement to off load into a truck It looked alot less agricultural than the ones pictured
