working on a 527 cat track skidder. torque converter is overheating and won't cool down when the load is taken away. pressure tests reveal torque converter outlet pressure is low. trans filter had absolutely no metal in it. trans shifts fine all gears forward and reverse. torque converter seems to lug engine the correct amount did not put a tach on this. did a torque converter leakage test drain 6+ gallons of oil out of torque converter after backing into the shop this seemed excessive, started and stalled for 10 seconds high idle stopped and drained 1+ gallons out again decided I had to check scavenge pump on the way in found no visible pump damage. when I pulled the pump off the torque converter housing oil drained out 1/2+ gallon 1) Where did this oil come from? pulled drain plug out of bottom of torque housing and another 1+ gallons came out 2) Where did this oil come from? 3) can a torque converter have a leak like this with zero metal in system? 4) any other ideas or check before torque comes out? ???????????????????????? :Banghead TIO
There should be a scavenge pump somewhere pulling the oil out of the bottom of the housing and pumping it into the transmission bearings. There is a pressure tap somewhere that would allow you to check. We used to call this lube pressure and it is also usually pretty low. I have seen D8 converters develop leakage between the internal components without making the oil look like anti seize. How many hours do you have on the machine?
