Not sure how to say it but guess they just tell you what parts were used to build that engine or frame. Kind of like the options on a car. Think the Chevy Z-28 Camaro the Z-28, at least originally, told you what the basic components were used to build the car, suspension, engine, transmission and so on. Same thing for a Cat machine, arraignment numbers for two different sounding machines might indicate if one had a high ambient temperature cooling system, an optional track configuration, and so on.

Think of the Arrangement Number as a Bill of Materials for assembling the machine, or the engine as well in the numbers you gave in your OP.

An arrangement number is basically a part number. Consider, for example, a starter motor. It has its own part number but the starter motor is comprised of many more individual parts and sub assemblies, each with their own part number. An arrangement number is just a high level part number. The caveat is with old Cat machines which had a "base" arrangement number but which could then be modified with various "attachments" which bore almost no connection to the machine's serial number. Modern Cat machines are much more predictable and their serial numbers tell what arrangements comprise a particular machine so it is possible to learn (with a few exceptions) what parts go into each machine down to the last washer.

Also not sure if it was a typo but the S/N you listed when run through SIS does not show the two arrangement numbers you listed.

That is interesting, what arraignment numbers does it show? Thanks, Bob

KS, could it be a recondition and upgrade to the arrangement? Have seen that on a few of the older belly pans.

Well arraignment numbers are mixed in with group number on SIS like this: If viewing that list while in SIS all the "Red" numbers can be clicked on and it will take you to a break down of that item.

By actual parts book Engine Arrangement is 7N1544 Engine s/n 3N69600-up Couldn't find a 8P7731 frame arrangement.

What was called a Frame Arrangement back in the day is now more commonly known as a General Arrangement, in other words the complete (basic) Machine Arrangement. 8P-7731 General Arrangement breaks down to: - 7N-1544 - Engine Ar - Basic 7N-3898 - Installation Ar 8P-7732 - Chassis Ar 8P-7733 - Hydraulic Ar 8P-7734 - Loader Ar 8P-7735 - Power Train Ar Funnily enough all of the above are listed in the table in KSH's post #9 if you look closely......... Without checking I assume that the breakdown of (for example) 7N-3898 Installation Ar is all the groups listed below it until you get to the next major sub-group that is 8P-7732. So 7N-3898 would comprise 15 sub-groups. Looking at the titles of those sub-groups it would appear to me that the 7N-3898 Installation Ar would appear to be for the installation of the engine.
