Looking at this 2004 Cat D5n XL 4400 hours. Nice straight machine all over. What’s it’s worth?
Around here that’s a 50k machine but you may get a deal at 40k, have to jump fast for that price though.
They are asking 90k
Maybe take a look at Machinery Trader and see what recent machines that were sold actually fetched as compared to the asking price. You could also look at what's out there for sale right now. Pardon Our Interruption
That’s too much money. I could see it at 50k or even 60k but it’s 22 years old. It sold for a quarter mil, when new. Figure 50% used even in great condition and depreciation, maybe 60k.
Only one asking price found on Machinery Trader in the 4,000 to 5,000 hour range. Asking $115,000. Three found sold at auction with the same hour range. Average price $26,532. That is a 77% differential. That asking price is probably not possible. Usual mark up by dealer over auction is around 30%. That mark up would put usual asking price in the range of $38,000. That can of course be adjusted up or down depending on the actual condition of the machine. For $90,000 the machine would have to have an enclosed cab, forest sweeps, ripper, new undercarriage, clean samples and so on.
We bought this one last year for $36,500. It has 7,100 hrs on it and will need an undercarriage soon. I looked for a good while and prices were all over so we jumped on this one.
Anyone know what these dozers cost when they were new? Ours is a 2005 model. I've bought new farm tractors and skid steers but never priced new construction equipment.
A D5N with around 1,100 hours on it sold yesterday on Auctiontime for a touch over $90,000. I'd been watching it and thought it might bring $60k since it was low hours and in good shape. Guess these old dozers are still worth something. Guessing a new dozer to replace it would be pushing $300k?
Are people buying them for yard art? I just don't foresee that much construction happening with everyone so broke, and the economy. They aren't big enough for a huge gold mine so I'm lost at what the demand is?
I think farmers and ranchers are snatching these up. We bought ours to use on the ranch. No emissions to full with and fairly easy to work on yourself or have a field tech out that works for himself. They are a huge gamble but at the rates folks are charging for dozer work now days it's not too hard to work the repair bills out of a machine.
We are covered up with work right now with a ton of work - commercial, institutional, industrial coming down the pipeline.
Bought a new D6N Xl with cab, ac and rippers new in 2006. It was right at $200K
What are the particulars on the Auctiontime unit. Year, hours, cab, forest sweeps, ripper, side boom, actual condition of the undercarriage. Can't see a new D5N going for $300K but I'll ask when I get the chance.
So maybe $150,000 or so for a D5N?
Yeah I would say that's close. $150-160K?
The D5N is no longer a thing. A D4 became a D6K, there is no D5 and the D6 became the D6T. The D6K I'm told lists for $300,000. I'm not quite sure yet if that price is the D6K or the D6T. Working that figure backwards using the rate of inflation puts a retail asking price $136,052.76 in 1994. Machinery is not like a painting that appreciates over time although that is what some sales reps want to push.
There is a new D5 which is the old D6N. The new Next Gen D5 (the old D6N) with factory GPS is right at $400K. Had my salesman quote one recently. Friend of mine GA just bought one and he said it's a very nice tractor.
Driving around I see more D6N dozers than any other Cat dozer built from 2000 up. I don't figure they discontinue a dozer that popular, maybe rename it but surely not discontinue.
They didn't discontinue it...
Forgot to add the D6K became the new D4. The D6K was oval track, the D6N high track. Now the number size starts at D1 and goes through D11. I have a D3 which is the old D5K which interestingly enough is bigger than my D5G which preceded the D5K. Clear as mud right?
It’s not like the older models were clear in any way either though. Having D6K, D6N, and D6T was fun when you got told you were “gonna be working on a D6 today” At least it’s straight D1-D11 and you know it’s gonna get bigger/heavier as you go up
Agreed. Big difference between a D6K and D6T. When we first got our Next Gen D3 we had to tell everyone "It's the old D5K".
My imput , In my part of the planet, we small farmers are so broke that we can´t pay contructors to do jobs anymore. Solution is to aquire some steel. For example our case, we got a 25k dozer with some snags, done some 100H with the snags and when it did quit, was a 3k repair. (price of a dozer hour here is 150euro give it or take) that payed the big repair and other small things that we had to fix, like installing a turbo and 2 or 3 rollers filters new oils, alternator, starter overhaul, and 1/4 th of the dozer price. After this repair, we clock 200h more to build a small dam, at this point the iron is payed. We done the job in our terms and when we wanted. When we were searching for it, we wanted a 15Tmax and 10T minimum, so D6M and D5H came on radar, as the D6N models were too expensive and a lot of electronics. In my opinion it worth the assle to repair this old machines, as they sometimes will run for another 30 years, and some thousand hour more, and this dozers are one man job, few or none electronics, no DPF or other ******* throwing malfunctions.
