Check valve fitting broken or normal, CAV injection pump

On my CASE 580 se , the Lucas injection pump has a black fuel line fitting closest to the drive end where the pump mounts to the engine. Question: is this fuel return check valve fitting supposed to be in 3 pieces ( ball, spring, fitting) or are the ball and spring supposed to be captured and held inside the end of the fitting? The parts diagram I’ve been looking at does not show a separate ball and spring. Does it matter? Thanks.

It’s supposed to be 1 piece.. BUT.. a lot of times they get stuck and blow out the front seals.. My suggestion is to leave it clear and pitch the guts.. You’ll be happier in the long run.. Look inside the hole on the pump.. The small black piece that holds the guts might still be in there.?? get it out.

Thanks for that Pumpguy. I guess someone thought it was a good idea, could it be that it was necessary on some of the 100’s of variants of this CAV dpa pump that were made but not so much on this model?
