Pulled the covers off today and the right side is a little low but no big deal, the left side is dry, a couple of questions about the...what damage could happen with the chains being dry? What is the best way to clean the chain case before adding new oil? And the is a round plate with a grease fitting between the tires that has a slight leak and I assume that is where the oil is going to. Do I have to buy a new gasket for that or could I just use a good quality sealant instead?? Thanks
your chains will wear prematurily if they are run dry very long. To clean the chain cases if the are fairy clean you can elevate the front of the machine and clean them out with a solvent sprayer, if they are very bad use a paower washer and then let then dry out good, refill with oil and besure to grease the cluster procket shaft and axles good. Also while you have the machine elevated in the front and washed out good take a magnet and check the back bottom corners for any debris left from past repairs. The chain boxes hold 6 quarts of oil. I usually put in 7 qts which will give you an oil depth of about 3/4 inch with the machine level which is enough for the cahins to dip into well. Try tightening the bnuts on the center cluster shaft before you go to far. Alot of times they are loose and will allow some oil seepage at the gasket. If you pull the shaft out be sure to get the thrust washers reinstalled on each side of the cluster sprocket.
