Checking hrs on a D6-N

Okiecat ยท 2016-09-09 22:53

Found a '06 D6-N. Owners says it has 3000hrs and he has owned it 18 months. Im not saying he is shady. Im sure the dash says 3000 but maybe somebody else changed the panel out. Thats not very many hrs for a 10 yr old dozer. Short of calling a cat mechanic and hooking up computer, is there anyway a person can get the total frame hrs. Im 6 hrs from this machine but very interested in purchasing. Any ideas

What shape is the undercarriage in and is it Cat undercarriage? If it's anything other than Cat is a dead give away. Original undercarriage I suspect would be worn better than 50%. 3000 hours the machine should be primo otherwise. Post some pictures if you can. A lot of times when you see a machine up close there will be clues to low or high hours or camouflage to try and make it look like low hours. Cylinders weeping, signs of new paint, worn out/ripped seat, replaced hoses, hour meter looks replaced or dash has been apart, oil in the belly pan, etc. Another possible giveaway is a seemingly low price for a premium low hour machine. Still would be a good idea to have a mechanic check it out.

Hey Dave, Thanks for reply. Your right on, looking for clues. Especially the undercarrage. Like I said Im 6+ hours from it and havent seen it. He has it at an equip traders place. The pics look ok,but thats not enough details! Its gotta be right cause Im going to run the h*"* out of it for 5 yrs.

If you had a serial number you might ask if someone here can look it up in the Cat system. There may be information there about previous owners or the original selling dealer. I don't recall if that model has a separate hour meter or it is incorporated in the electronics package.

Well just as I thought. If they gave me the correct serial, the machine had 8600 hrs in 2013.

It still could be a good machine and this new information could be a big bargaining chip.
