Cutting Edge – best way to replace CASE1845 bucket

hdm ยท 2016-11-22 15:02

case 1845 needs new cutting edge. It shows holes for mounting one. Wonder if anyone knows a good stock one to buy and cutdown etc? Wish i could order online , but shipping from US would be prohibitive. I'm in Canada...which means may be harder to find something appropriate. Main use is snow removal...and probably dig/spread some gravel. Cheers, Hayes

Are you talking about replacing the removable (reverseable) cutting edge that bolts to the bucket, or replacing the original edge welded to the bucket?

I need both for my bucket. It's been "modified/fixed" over the years and it's got a lot going on that is not original. And I'm up in Canada as well.

For what its worth have you looked for a good used bucket that might fit? or even a new one? it may not be worth spending a lot on repairing the existing Bucket if its been butchered up that bad. If its a quick attach system look for excessive wear on the plate.

Any of your local steel suppliers will either have or be able to order weld-on cutting edge. You probably have 4"x1/2" on there. It drills easy if you want to make holes to bolt it on, or weld it on & buy a bolt-on edge to bolt to the weld-on edge. It should be an afternoon repair. I'd check machinery dealers (construction) for bolt-on edges. None of these items are hard to source.

If you haven't done so, it would be worth inspecting the bucket very closely to see if the wear bars underneath are still good and strong, or worn out ...is the bucket bottom rusting ...is the bottom nice and smooth and overall not too bent or beat up? If it is, well then, maybe it makes sense like PopsiclePete says, to call around to all the equipment dealers you can think of and ask if they have a used bucket and how much it would be. A couple years ago I was on a quest to find a used tooth bucket and along the way I saw as couple Case 72" smooth edged buckets in ok (not perfect, but just ...ok) for around $400-$500 from dealers. I wasn't looking for a smooth bucket, but in terms of pricing, just letting you know what I saw. As for a replacement cutting edge for your bucket, here's a sample of what some go for in terms of comparing pricing: http://www.colemanequip.com/Parts_Detail.asp?partID=3648 There must be some online Canadian-based equipment sellers you can tap into. Or, you might check with the parts guys of your local equipment dealers. They probably buy them in bulk and may be able to get you a decent price. Are there any welding or steel distributors in your area that can get you a case-hardened edge? As I recall the holes are 6" on center, for the 1845C (going of memory now). If you do go the route of replacing your bucket's cutting edge, what you might consider is having the wear bar drilled with two sets of holes so you have the option of bolting on a wear bar, like you said, AND a set of teeth like these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/7-Bobcat-St...402585?hash=item3d06b30cd9:g:uJ0AAOSwYHxWJ8NK My toothed bucket has bolt-on teeth (individual teeth, not a tooth bar) and it works great. They're quite sturdy. Some new Bobcat buckets come set up that way with a second row of holes for bolting on teeth. Maybe you could just buy that cutting edge from Bobcat, although that might be a pricier way to go. Either way, it gives you the ability to install teeth when you want to do some real digging, or the wear bar for most other jobs. Just throwing it out there.

Thank you for the great advice.....My bucket is pretty beat up, worn and bent in more then a few places. I will probably look for a OK used bucket, be quicker, cheaper and easier in the long run then to try and fix what is wrong with my current unit.

Lots of good advice. My bucket is in good shape. minor bend at front on each side that can be hammered out. I"ll take better look this weekend though. The pattern i have is two rows of holes, 3" apart, that are 10" on center (will measure again). looks like 0.5" hole size. So a double row across the 73" bucket. In retrospect, looks like a pattern for teeth on front of bucket. For me, i believe a standard wear edge would be all i need. so probably just bolts on bottom, and teeth would bolt on top if i had both? don't really plan on looking for a new bucket. hoping to get a kit under $200.00 including the hardware to attach it, to keep my bucket rolling a number of more years. i also have the old style original attach for 1845 skidsteer, but easy enough to fab my own mounts to use any other attach mechanicsm...which i will do to put the forks and a snowplow on i'll keep looking to see i can find cheap solution for my machine. thanks,

Better pricing than i thought... may go for some teeth too.

Hey Brian if your bucket is worth fixing up, talk to some heavy equipment contractors for a used grader or scraper blade. They make dandy new cutting edges. I have a few laying around and a welder if you are up for a road trip
