D330C front motor seal removal

Lil Red ยท 2024-09-11 15:56

I have 1971 955K w D330C motor and the front seal leaks profusely. Looking for suggestions on how to remove front engine seal without damaging the crankshaft or engine block surfaces. We've removed harmonic balancer, pulleys, etc and cleaned it up really good. The seal sets back a ways so it's not the easiest to get to. Is there a tool available that would make this less difficult? All ideas/suggestions welcomed. Thanks! New seal....

Does the seal have a thin metal back on it? If so, they can usually be pulled by drilling a small hole (1/8" or so) through the metal and screwing in a sheet metal or wood screw. The screw head gives you something to pull on, usually with a carpenters hammer claws or similar. Driving the new seal in can be with a piece of pipe the right size with the end against the seal cleaned so no bits of metal from the pipe can come off. It seems to me that the front motor support is quite worn-- it looks like there is quite a bit of clearance at the top of the circular support. If this is the case, it maybe should be fixed or at least adjust the motor alignment to the transmission to avoid taking out the rubber pucks between the motor and transmission... Jon.

Thanks Jon, mission accomplished! We'll take a closer look at the motor support and alignment. Much appreciated! Aaron
