Hi guys, first post here. We have a D4D here that i have replaced the seals on one of the track adjusters and it blew the o-ring straight away. It also had grease coming out the back of the adjuster too, inside the spring. So it looks like i need to take the recoil spring out to get the adjuster seals inside replaced. I also took the other side covers off to have a look as we thought we may as well get them both done at the same time. Upon taking them off i found the recoil spring is broken in 2 places. http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/moose2367/Mobile%20Uploads/20151212_083005_zpslv2ybxjt.jpg http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/moose2367/Mobile%20Uploads/20151212_083013_zpsebbgqcwu.jpg We have the manual and seeing as this is the first dozer i have worked on it looked pretty straight forward, used a pin on the sprocket to compress the springs and tighten the nut on the adjuster. The first one was fine, but the second one, right hand side, there are no threads on the adjuster rod, looks like the nut is welded to the rod, so no way of keeping the spring compressed. Left Side http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/moose2367/Mobile%20Uploads/20151212_093414_zps9dm5lxth.jpg Right Side http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/moose2367/Mobile%20Uploads/20151212_093428_zpsebmsucya.jpg Any suggestions, seeing as the spring is already broken, i am thinking i should cut the rest of the spring with the plasma? Not sure why the pics are linking and not showing
Worked fine for me. Yup, the threadless side cut coils through until there's no tension left in the spring, then yank it all out and scrap it, sad to say. Lots of cheape aftermarket parts out there if you want, or CAT Classic parts.
definitely cut the spring before removal. I've found the least sphincter clenching method is to kind of "whittle" a wide U out of it slowly and it will kind of stretch and flex until it's touching the next link, I've seen and done just cutting straight through but it's always a little nerve wracking.
I was a bit nervous at first, but it can't go anywhere while wrapped around the ram. Tried the plasma but couldn't get enough angle to get cut all the way through. Ended up using the oxy, i think i cut 4 it at 4 places, there was no big surprises, once it was nearly cut through it just slowly stretched. Once there was no tension on it, we had to pry it out a bit with a couple of bars, as the inner spring stop was still the original one and i broke on of the 5/8 bolts. Had to cut the head off the other one too and pry it up from the bolt shank and the dowel. Luckily they came out after a bit of heat and i welded a big nut on to them.
