We own a D5h 8RC, probably about an '88 model. We have replaced the motor, torque converter and the 3in1 tranny pump, but the problem we are having is lack of power because the torque converter is filling up with oil and I was wondering if any body has ever had this problem before and what could be causing it? The cat mechanic said that the converter should have no more than 1 gal of oil in it and it has about 5 gal in it, in fact it fills the bell housing up so much that tranny oil starts coming out of the starter. Could we have possibly gotten a bad torque converter? Maybe a bad scavenger pump? Or, could the tranny oil cooler be stopped up? This machine has over 17000 hrs on it and we have too far now to get rid of it. Any ideas?
I would say a bad scavenger pump. I had Cat rebuild a Torque/Transmission many years ago on a D6D and they did not assemble the scavenger pump right and I had oil squirting out every were.
I had this problem on a machine and it had a screen for the outlet of the t/c the screen was plugged. I dont know if yours will have it you would have to check the parts book. It could be the scavenge pump, if that machine has one. You could check the t/c relief valve too that could be an issue. Try talking to your cat dealer they usualy have ex mechanics that are technical comunicators they be lots of help with that stuff.
Did you do the repairs or Cat? I agree with the things above and also add, that hopefully you remembered to took all the rags or plugs out of the hose for everything when you put it back togather and there isn't something like that plugging any of the lines. Something to think about it happens, sometime when we are in a hurry.Between this and your tracks your not doing to good. Good luck.
d6peg you do need if you have any questions about rags or restrictions check. 2 things common on the housing filling up with oil are pin hole in the converter or bad stator. the converter charge pump and regulator in the controll will always keep the inlet pressure higher than the outlet to keep the converter fully charged at all times . this needs checked after the oil problem is fixed im not sure on the 5 but inlet probly 75psi outlet 5 psi
Thanks for the suggestions. Constructo, A very good diesel mechanic done the motor. ASCO replaced the converter with a rebuild that we ordered. We done the pumps. We went this route for 2 reasons. To save money, and because of some issues with the service manager at Cat. Now, we didnt save any money and now it looks like we will have to swallow a double helping of pride. The dealership has a exceptional mechanic that is also a good friend and if we can get him and only him we will now go through the dealership. Sometimes when we try to save a dollar it cost $2!!!:Banghead But guess what, we got 2 old D7E's that run great.:drinkup
The rag or plug idea could possibly be the problem, have seen it happen a few times, however that does not mean that there is not something wrong with one of the rebuilt components. Need to hook up some gauges and see what pressures are.
Our mechanic has about decided the new rebuilt torque converter failed. Cat (our dealer) wanted $14000 to come and fix it , but we we were going to have to use there (cat) converter, so we would just have to eat the rebuilt converter that still has warranty on it.
The new rebuilt TQ was bad. The snap ring that holds the shaft in place broke or was never put in, allowing the converter to float back and forth in the housing. Sorry if I dont make sense but this was out of my skill level. I just stood back and tried to learn what I could.
Did they treat you right on replacing it?
Yes they did but we are still out all the extra expense of the new tranny pump and the numerous extra $s spent on mechanics trying to figure this deal out. All of this crap with torque converters and tranny pumps sure make me like the old direct drives more and more. At least even I could work on them.
One down and one to go ? Have you gotten any more done with the track issue with the R? Hopefully things will smooth out here now.Good luck:usa
Constructo, I agree with one down and one to go. That little D5H will push a load now, but Dad told me today that he was probably going to sell it if he can get enough money for it. I might buy it myself, it should be a good machine with all the work he has spent on it recently. As far as the track issue with the R. The field rep came and checked % wear for the undercarriage and everything seemed to be o.k., the only thing that concerned me a little was that the bushings had 35% wear as where the rollers, idlers, rails and segments ranged from 14% to about 19%.
d6peg As far as the bushing wear being higher i would say that is the norm for where you live, because of your sandy soils.Sounds like with all the internal wear of the pins the bushing wear of now isn't a problem. Here i can usually run my tracks, bushing wise until the tracks destruct, because of the wet dirt conditions.I use to turn the bushings because of the pin wear, but that was back with the dry rails not the sealed and lubed rails. The way it looks as of now i would run until you have more dry pins then you can stand, and get rebuild prices, and with no better luck then your rails has been i would opt to go new.Check in the the track program others had mention and see if you could get some kind of deal because of the dry pin issue. Also even if it mean down time i would take the tracks off next time to have them sent into track shop for rebuild pins and bushing turned. But just guessing i don't see your bushing going before more pin problems. Glad to here the other machine is up and running, but now get rid of it?????? Is your dad ready to quit or get a newer machine,if newer to bad he didn't do it earlier.Good luck:usa
Constructo, Dad will be 77 yr old in Sept and he has had some health issues this past year and is ready to give up his part of the business. What scares me is when he quits he will be dead within a year. Subject change, I dont know about you but we are really slow right now, first time in 7 yrs with no jobs ahead of us. It seems with the economy right now farmers and ranchers are not wanting to spend any money at this time; we need rain bad.
d6peg Okay ! I see .Well i'm sorry to hear he is having to retire, but just keep him bringing you things out to your jobs, like meals, dinner, water ,then just to check in see how things are going. I know how you feel,by parents have been gone for sometime, but still miss them. Also have two brothers that use to help me,but both have health problems, one is home bound, other is hardly able to get around, but he comes and helps me move my equipment ,by giving me a ride back the my pickup so i can leave the truck at the job. Well luckly we are at a land boom(high dollar corn price) right now and have a lot of farm work to do,plus i do field drainage work.Which i know is not used much where you are.As usual in a boom i can't find enough good help and it has been a long, long winter here. Training a couple young guys and they are coming along pretty good ,just need a little more time. Before i feel comfortble in turning them loose on there own. This year they will have to kick in ,because i'm not any spring chicken either. Been shut down here since first week in Dec. and now it is still so wet you can't hardly walk across this good old black muddy fields without sinking to the top of your boot. Always something?????? good times, bad weather, good weather, bad times.Just keep looking and searching ,i have been there before and know what it is like. I'm sure you living in cattle country and high dollar corn, making cattle cheap again doesn't help alone with the dry weather.I was in the Army back in 1966,at El Paso so i know what dry is down there.Good luck and hang in there. Get your dad a computer and get him on here telling storys that will keep him out of trouble!!!! Well maybe :usa
Man, I cant imagine trying to teach him how to run a computer. It took me 5 yrs to teach him how to get his voicemail off of the cell phone.
I gave my Mom a used laptop this year for xmas, shes 81. She learned how to e-mail first. Then I got a program that all she has to do is click on my name on her computer, I tell my computer to listen we are connected so I can run her computer. Really really helps when shes stuck. She's getting it down, haven't heard from her for about 3 weeks now. She got started doing what she wanted to this month, playing bridge.
