I'd be looking for a leak on the suction side with those symptoms. Did you replace all the seals/gaskets, etc, on the lines right the way from the transmission oil pan when you replaced the pump..? It's a bit difficult to be more specific without a Serial Number.

My first thought was also a suction leak. Loose clamp on a hose coupling or not positioned right, oring that fell out of place while fighting line into position and so on. If it was a leak on the pressure side it would be easy to find by the oil spraying out! Only other problem would be if there was a problem in the pump itself, but seems like if that was the case it would be worse when warmed up.

Did you put new suction hoses on? What was the condition of the old? Dry and crusty? Moving things around cracked the old. It sounds like its loosing prime. Put a pressure gauge on top of the filter housing, should be 300-350. Pop the floor plate and take a peek at the driveshaft after startup
