What about parts? are they standard with North American made? What about drive train configuration? I have hears about 3306 engine with weak transmissions. Problems?
Somewhere there is a cross-reference chart from non-US built machines to US built ones. Once you get the correct corresponding Serial Number prefix ordering parts should be easy enough.
It may not be an issue nowadays, but back when a lot of Japanese iron was flowing West after their economy went upside down in the mid 90's, we were getting many Japanese built dozers that were not built with ROPS. Sadly the people that thought they were cutting a fat hog buying them at auctions quickly found that not only was the ROPS not present, neither were the factory installed fabricated weldments to bolt them to. Just something to keep in mind when considering the purchase.
We own a D7H that was made in Japan in the early 90's. I wish the USA machines had the same engines, the Euro market doesn't have the same fuel restrictions and that D7 runs circles around the same USA built machine. As to the trans being weak, we went through ours at 12k hours and just replaced bearings and seals. The only parts problem we have had was on the engine itself, had to buy a parts book specific to the Euro market machine. Our machine also came with factory cab/air and Rops, so no worries there. It does pay to look them over real good before buying, if it falls apart coming off the move truck, you own both halves.
just bear in mind D7F was made 70 -74. Shes already at least 40 yrs old !! And landtrax is very correct it would never have had rops mounts or canopy from birth, and may not even have the holes for the mounts to bolt to. D7Fs both USA and Japanese both had early and late transmissions depending on serial numbers and the same with engines D333C and 3306. technically only differences are front covers, water pumps and heads. But mechanically they are all the same, major difference is electrical stuff, ie starter, alternator will be Mitsubishi electric. We had both usa and Japanese models of all D6s and 7s come down under here from 67 onwards. neither had any issues that the others didn,t.
Interesting post. I own a D7f 61g1046. Sprockets had Japan stamped on them. Mine came with ROPS but have no clue to determine which tranny it has. So far it has been a solid machine. Sure beats the 3T
61G is the us military spec D7F. Japanese ones were 91E geardrive and 92E powershift.
with my 61g1046 what tranny would it have, the trouble free one or the other less friendly
The D7F I am looking at purchasing has s/n 92E01576. Does this have a 3306 engine and a "good" transmission. It is a powershift unit.
92E01576 dates from mid-1973. Hopefully someone can give you information regarding the engine & transmission based on that date.
at that s/n is still D333C and early larger transmission. Engine is no problem its almost a 3306. just different front cover and water pump, head and a few other minor things; both are 638 cubic inch displacement. 3306 has its own separate serial number. D333C uses the same serial number as the machine its in. the early large transmission fills up most of the room between the chassis rails, smaller newer trans has a lot more room around it
D6 Merv Here are some engine pictures. Can you tell if it is a 3306 or a D3336?
mine is military it has two canister oil filters. yours has one like many of the 3306. otherwise it looks like my D333
didn't know that, D6 Merv My military d7f is a 94N61g1046. Was told it was made in Japan. Thanks for your info.
George K; engine in that pic is a D333C the spin on oil filters came out on the very last D333C engines; but the main difference to a 3306 is the water pump
