1st gear stopped working so I pulled the transmission to find all the filters Clogged with flakes of paint. The paint from the inside of the transmission is flaking off in places. If I whipe a rag on the remaining paint it's as if the paint is not dry. Any idea what could have caused this? The no 5 clutch pack is worn out and a few seals destroyed hence the no first gear. I am guessing contamination of some sort occurred. Has anyone had this problem before? Does not seem like it got so hot as to peel paint. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.
Almost sounds as if a chemical reaction that dissolved the paint. What fluid you using, how long since last service and who did it? Most of the internal paint on these is similar to a powder coat, damned near to impossible to remove.
Last service was a while ago. The fluid used was basically no name brand. I'm guessing the cheap oil had caustic soda or something in it that reacted with the paint with a bit of heat.
Time to flush, get all that out and pull some covers, find what you can that is loose and remove. Only other option is dump it and gut it to clean all the crap out then go back in with all new seals and inspected bearings. Will need be flushing lines and all on that. Sorry to hear and sorrier to say it should probably come out.
Is the engine using any coolant if it is check the trans cooler for a leak the coolant stuffs the clutch plate lineings big time have had this happen to one of my d7h the water destroys the paper based linings and some of the coolant additives are a great paint stripper mate of mine had this happen to his d6c it stripped every bit of paint in its back end
I hear you there, all sorts of caustic reactive chemicals in coolant, especially with the compounds to counteract cavitation.
