Hi guys We have a D8L (53y) that has recently had a complete drivetrain rebuild. (transmission, final drives brakes and clutches) This was done by the local Cat agent. The problem is the right hand side break does not engage when steering unless you really yank the lever super hard or give the foot brake a good stab. They have tested all the associated hydraulic pressures (for both sides) and they are all within spec. It looks like we may have to break the track and pull the final drive out but was wondering if anyone had any other ideas first or encountered something similar. Also one other test I tried was to point it downhill and pull both levers half in to let it freewheel on the steering clutches then jump on the foot brake. This caused the machine to veer left. PS I am not a mechanic (Blasting is my game) but my brother is a Cat trained mechanic but only services our own machines now.
If the dealer just overhauled it then get them engaged to correct it, simple as that.
Sounds to me like the RH brake is not engaging fast enough if at all. The brakes are spring applied and oil released. Oil pressure is not dropping fast enough or the springs may have been installed wrong on that side. You can check pressure drop speed and compare sides. Later Bob
Yeah thanks Gavin...the dealer is looking they are just scratching their head a bit is all and some parts like the control valve we stripped and fitted ourselves is all. So if it's a valve issue it's on us but if it's in the brakes it's on them..... Normally we do all our own work but the Quarry has just been too busy the last few months. Also thanks Bob I think that's the way we will go.
You were on the right track there Bob...turns out the springs were out of spec....Not sure why no one bought this to our attention one of the two times they had the final drive out but third time lucky and a new set of springs now she is working like a dream.
Great to hear mate; have you looked at the D8K at all ? Cheers Merv
Howdy Merv Yeah that went into Stevies about a month ago and they dove into the back end. Apart from one of the brakes disintegrating I don't think there was much else wrong. They replaced all the normal seals and flushed her out so she should be as good as new now.....I just don't have anything for her to do..... and on top of that we bought Macs D8H and 463 today so am well covered for Dozers at the moment.
Must be dozer repair month in nz ! Had bevel gear out of my D6D this month, plus abit of a tidy up, just got fuel tank and seat to go back; then physic myself up to look into my final drives and fit new track rollers. You better have kept some money; I hear rogers D6Ds coming up for auction next month You going to use the D8H as a scoop unit I take it. You,ll be able to drive a different dozer each day of the week Cheers :drinkup
